According the FBI, peak hours for juvenile crime are between 3 and 8 p.m. Some kids get out of school and return to an empty house every day. Where are their parents? Are they negligent or uncaring? More often than not, both parents are working to keep food on the table. Such societal circumstances are creating a gap during after-school hours, placing our youth at risk. The term "at-risk" brings visions of impoverished kids starving for attention and care. While this is part of it, there is definitely more to this group. Research shows that relationships with caring adults can help these youth in their most formative years. The purpose of after-school care is to help kids find their way. The focus must be on relationship building to provide positive, structured leisure time for youth during afterschool hours until mom or dad can make it home. We offer a constructive alternative for these kids through services that ensure their safety and pursue a promising future. These programs provide responsible supervision, constructive activities, and insulation from harmful peer pressure during high-risk hours. Check out our options for afterschool care on pages 17 & 24. 46%27%53%33% less likely to begin using illegal drugs.* less likely to begin using alcohol.* less likely to skip school.* less likely to engage in school violence.* * According to the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, youth closely tied to a positive mentor 7 979.764.3486 | parks@cstx.gov | COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION GUIDE | 8 | COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION GUIDE | Fall 2015 SEPTEMBERMOVIES IN THE PARKSept. 11 | 7-10 p.m.Veterans Parks & Athletic ComplexMore info on page 40. All that’s required is a two-year commitment to remove trash from a designated greenway at least twice a year. Volunteers will be recognized on the city’s website and on signs along their adopted greenway. Greenways are corridors of protected open space that follow natural features, such as creeks and rivers, and their floodplains that are largely kept in a natural state. Some greenways link neighborhoods and parks with each other through multi-use paths, also called greenway trails. In some instances, greenways are along human-made features like utility or road corridors. Most greenways in College Station are along our creeks: Wolf Pen Creek, Bee Creek, Lick Creek, Spring Creek, Carter’s Creek and their tributaries. Greenways have numerous benefits and accomplish multiple goals. They help protect habitat and create corridors for wildlife as well as improve air and water quality. Greenways allow floodplains to function as they were intended for occasional or periodic flooding which in turn minimizes costly damage to developed areas.Multi-use paths create an alternate mode of transportation which can relieve Looking for a way to help improve College Station?Adopt a greenway! congestion on our roadways and reduce pollution.
