Many aspects of topography can change over time. These changes may also alter how water flows around you. Development and less green space can give rain water less area to soak in or block direct paths to waterways. Without proper drainage control, heavy storms can cause flash flooding. HOMEOWNERS’ POLICIES COVER FLOODS Truth:The typical home insurance policy doesn’t cover flood or earthquakes. These two natural disasters require separate and specific coverage. INSURANCE IS EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATLEY Truth: While you can purchase flood insurance at any time, there is a 30- day waiting period from when you buy coverage to when it starts. If the hurricane has made landfall, it’s too late to call in for a policy for that particular event. With flood insurance, it always pays to plan ahead. IT IS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR HOMEOWNERS Truth: In National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) participating communities, many residents, including renters and business owners, are eligible to purchase a flood insurance policy. Limits vary based on building types, usage and contents. College Station is an active participant in the NFIP.
