Holiday Safety from CSPD & CSFD The College Station Fire and Police Departments have teamed up to provide some tips on how to keep you safe this holiday season. CHRISTMAS TREES If buying an artificial tree, make sure to select a fire-retardant one. Live trees need to be watered daily to make them less flammable. Trees should be placed at least three feet away from any heat source like fireplaces, heaters/vents, candles, etc. Replace any string of lights that have worn or broken cords or loose bulbs. Always turn off the tree lights before leaving the house or going to bed. After Christmas, get rid of the live tree. Dried-out trees are a fire hazard. You can recycle them by leaving them curbside on your scheduled brush/ bulky collection day. Accessories must be removed. Trees are either composted or chipped and spread throughout city parks. LEAVING TOWN? If you’re going out of town, don’t leave your keys under a mat, in a planter, mailbox, etc. Those are some of the first places thieves would look in order to break into your home. It’s better to leave keys with a trusted friend. This friend can also stop by to water your live Christmas tree, pick up your mail/ newspaper, and check things while you’re away. It’s recommended to keep a record of the serial numbers of all of your valuables in case of burglary, fire or natural disaster. This record should be easy to access no matter where you are, like your email account. This way you’ll be able to easily file claims with your insurance company. WHEN YOU GO SHOPPING Don’t leave your purse unattented in the shopping basket, always have it on you. Keep your receipts separate from your merchandise bags so you’ll have proof of purchase and ownership if they’re stolen. Keep your purchased items and valuables out of sight in your car. Put them in the trunk, cover them or hide them. HEAR IT. SEE IT. REPORT IT. Don’t hesitate to report suspicious activity to CSPD at 979.764.3600. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
