Texas Amateur Athletic Federation’s
Summer Games of Texas will return
July 30-Aug. 3 at venues across Bryan-
College Station. Amateur athletes
from across the state will be in town
competing for medals. This Olympics-
style competition is managed by the Texas
Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF), the
governing body for athletics and sports in
the state’s parks and recreation world.
Last year, 8,438 athletes from across the
state competed in archery, lifeguarding,
boxing, golf, skateboarding, soccer, disc
golf, swimming, tennis, and track and field.
Only 220 participants were from College
Station, which means the rest – along
with about 20,000 of their coaches, family
members and friends – were visitors who
dropped an estimated $6 million into the
local economy from July 31-Aug. 4, 2014.
The competition was at an extremely high
level, with 97 Games of Texas records set,
including 64 in swimming and 33 in track
and field. Winners advanced to the 2015
State Games of America in Lincoln, Neb.

Preventing Stormwater Pollution
Storm drains are designed to prevent
flooding when heavy rains occur by
directing stormwater into the drains where
underground pipes transport it into area
creeks, rivers and lakes. During this process,
the stormwater can collect litter, fertilizers,
motor oils and other contaminants. This is
why it’s important to keep pollutants off our
lawns, pavements and streets.
Here’s how you can help keep our local
waterways clean:
• Never overwater your lawn.
• Don’t exceed fertilizer package
recommendations and avoid
application right before rainfall.
• Dispose used auto fluids at
designated drop-off locations
• Pick up and dispose of your pet’s
waste properly.
• Select native plants, which will
require less water, fertilizer, and
pesticides.
• Sweep up yard debris, instead of
washing it down a storm drain.
• Cover piles of loose dirt and mulch.

information, visit brazoscleanwater.org .

Facts About Flood Insurance
Anywhere it rains, it can flood, and it only
takes a few inches of water to cause major
damage to your home. Since standard
homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover
flooding, it’s important to research your
flood insurance options.
In 1968, Congress created the National Flood
Insurance Program (NFIP) to help provide
flood insurance to homeowners, renters,
and business owners if their community
participates in the NFIP. Participating
communities agree to adopt and enforce
ordinances that meet or exceed Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
requirements to reduce the risk of flooding.
Communities that participate in the NFIP
are rated by FEMA through the Community
Rating System.
The City of College Station participates
in NFIP and has been rated as a Class-7
Community, which results in lower flood
insurance premiums. Flood insurance rates
are reduced 15 percent for structures in
Special Flood Hazard Areas and 5 percent
in 500-year Areas. (Note that Preferred Risk
Policies are already at reduced rates and do
not have additional premium reductions.)
Many people are under the misconception
that they are ineligible for flood insurance
because of where they live, or their
mortgage status. But the truth is, most
can get flood insurance. Remember these
flood insurance basics and you can get
flood insurance: if you live in or outside a
floodplain, if your property has flooded
before and even if your mortgage broker
doesn’t require it.
Flood insurance is required by law for
property owners living in a high-risk area, or
Special Flood Hazard Area, with a federally-
backed mortgage. Also, if you’ve received
a federal grant or loan for previous flood
losses, you must have a flood policy to
qualify for future aid.
