deeply, as infrequently as possible. Setting
your system to run for three, 5-minute
intervals lets the soil absorb more water
than watering for 15 minutes at one time.
SUMMER WATER DOs & DON’Ts
To help avoid water waste this summer,
the City of College Station offers these
suggestions:
• DON’T water your lawn between 10
a.m. and 6 p.m.
• DON’T operate an irrigation system
with sprinkler heads that are broken or
out of adjustment.
• DON’T allow water to run off your
property or allow water to pond in the
street or parking lot.
• DO mulch around trees and plants to
retain soil moisture and to prevent
evaporation.
• DO cover hot tubs and pools to reduce
evaporation losses.
• DO use a broom, not a hose, to clean
your driveway, patio or sidewalk.

The Irrigation Association has named
July Smart Irrigation Month to raise
awareness of the benefits of efficient
watering practices. Outdoor water usage
accounts for up to 80 percent of home water
use in the summer. Much of this is wasted
through poor practices such as letting the
water run onto the sidewalk, driveway or
street. Automated irrigation systems offer
convenience while protecting your landscape
investment. Unfortunately, they are often
used in a “set it and forget it” manner,
resulting in improper watering and run-off.
A well-maintained system, however, keeps
your landscape beautiful and healthy, while
minimizing water waste.
DOES YOUR GRASS NEED WATER?
Many lawns receive double the water
amount needed to maintain a healthy turf.
To determine if your grass needs water, give
your lawn the footprint test: If you leave
footprints on the grass after walking on it, it’s
time to water. If the grass springs back, just
relax and enjoy your beautiful turf.
Watering too much or too frequently results
in shallow roots, weed growth, disease and
fungus. For a healthier landscape, water

CFL & LED Lighting Rebates
Available to CSU residential customers
Home lighting costs can account for almost
15 percent of your electric bill each month.
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and
Light Emitting Diode lamps (LEDs) can
reduce these lighting costs by as much as
75 percent without reducing your lighting
output. CFL and LED lights produce less
heat than the standard incandescent lights,
thus reducing unwanted summer heat gain
in your home that puts additional strain on
your air conditioner.
CFL and LED Lighting rebates are available
to College Station Utility residential
customers. CSU will credit your electrical
account $1 for every incandescent light bulb
that you replace with a CFL and $2 for the
replacement with an LED. Each customer
can receive up to $20 during a 12-month
period. In order to see the most benefits, it
is recommended to replace lights that are
most used in your home first, then replace
the rest as they go out.
To learn more about residential CFL & LED
lighting rebates, visit cstx.gov/utilities.
