Only five of the award-winning cities were
in Texas.
All residents are encouraged to step
outside to mingle with their neighbors and
to visit with local law enforcement officers,
who will be stopping at neighborhood
block parties throughout the evening.

Crime Prevention Tips
While no neighborhood is immune to
crime, following these tips can help keep
your family and neighbors safe:
• Never leave valuables visible in your
vehicle and always lock your doors.
• Always lock your windows and doors of
your home when you leave.
• On sliding glass doors, install a bracket
or lock designed to keep the doors
from being lifted off their track.
• Keep exterior lights on at night or
install motion sensor lights.
• Engrave your valuables with your
driver license number.
• Have a friend pick-up your mail and/or
newspaper when you’re out of town.

National Night Out
The goal of National Night Out is to
heighten awareness for crime prevention,
to strengthen neighborhood spirit and
police-community partnerships. It should
also send a message to criminals that the
neighborhoods are organized and fighting
back against crime.
Last year, the College Station Police
Department visited approximately 50
neighborhood block parties throughout
the city. College Station was also an award
winner in the 2010 National Night Out
Awards Competition among cities up to
100,000 in population.

International Walk to School Day
Wednesday, Oct. 5The City of College Station is promoting
International Walk to School Day on
Wednesday, Oct. 5 to encourage more
students to walk or bike to school. Walking/
biking to school is not only healthy for
the students, but it is healthy for our
environment, too. This event should bring
communities closer together.
Here’s how you can get involved:
• Organize a Walk to School Day activity
for your family, neighborhood or school.
• Register your activity for free on
walktoschool.org.
• Spread the word about your activity to
get others involved!
Walk to School Day activity ideas:
• Organize a Walking School Bus or Bicycle
Train in your neighborhood, where
children gather together to walk/bike to
school under adult supervision.
• Have a school-based welcome party on
the day of the event to greet participants
with stickers, goodies or refreshments.
• Encourage participants to track and log
miles they walk/bike to earn prizes.
If you’re interested in participating in
International Walk to School Day or if you
have any questions, please contact Venessa
Garza at 979.764.3674 or vgarza@cstx.gov.
