HomeMy WebLinkAboutUBI 2011 OCTCITY OF COLLEGE STATION FOR If you vote “For” this proposition, you will be voting to: • Allow city elections to remain in May, but only of odd-numbered years. • Change the terms of office for the mayor and city council members from the current three-year terms to four-year terms. • Change term limits for the mayor and city council members from the current maximum of six consecutive years to eight consecutive years. If the proposition carries, then the next general election would be in May 2013. AGAINST If you vote “Against” this proposition, you will be voting to: • Remove city elections from May. The city council would then consider a resolution changing to November the date upon which the city conducts its election of the mayor and city council. • Keep the terms of office for the mayor and city council members at the current three-year terms. • Keep term limits for the mayor and city council members at the current maximum of six consecutive years. If the proposition fails, the next general election would be in November 2012. The action was taken to comply with a new state law. Through Senate Bill 100, the Texas Legislature requires compliance with the Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act, which is intended to make it easier for these voters to receive and cast ballots in a timely manner. This new state law directly interferes with the City of College Station’s existing May primary election and runoff voting schedules, so a change is necessary. Below is the ballot language adopted under the approved ordinance: - - - - - - - - - - - - PROPOSITION NO. 1 FOR/AGAINST Shall the Charter of the City of College Station be amended to provide for the regular election of the Mayor and City Council to be held in May of odd-numbered years with the Mayor and City Council serving four (4) year term lengths for no more than eight (8) consecutive years?
