Spring Season Stormwater Runoff Pollution Stormwater runoff occurs when precipitation from rain flows over impervious surfaces like driveways, sidewalks and streets and enters the storm sewer system. Polluted stormwater runoff can have many adverse effects on plants, fish, animals and people. Any discharge to the municipal storm sewer that is not entirely composed of storm- water or listed as a permitted stormwater discharge is referred to as an illicit discharge. Illicit discharges may include: water line flushing of hyper-chlorinated water, non- residential vehicle washing, chlorinated swimming pool discharges, contaminated runoff from construction sites, runoff from a dumpster, building exterior washing with soap, parking lot washing with soap, illegal dumping of solids or liquids and restaurant oil/grease container leaks. Public awareness and participation in this issue is essential. If you observe an illicit or suspected illicit discharge, please report it to the Illicit Discharge Hotline at Inside College Station March 2011 {PAGE 2}
