Older adults in College Station have long
sought a comfortable place to socialize and
engage in activities and programs designed
specifically for them. The Southwood
Community Center is now that place.
Located at 1520 Rock Prairie Rd., the
center is a key component of the
Southwood Community Park complex. The
facility includes a meeting room, game
room, computer lab and kitchen. Other
amenities are a big-screen television,
stereo equipment and coffee service.
Special activities and groups include
dominoes, bridge, yoga, Tai Chi, Sit &
Fit, computer classes, Wii, movies and a
lending library. Seniors are also welcome
to just gather with friends for free coffee!
The Southwood Community Center is
open to seniors from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on
weekdays, and is available for seniors and
non-seniors alike to rent on weekends for
parties, meetings or other special events.

Adult Kickball Registration
Registration for the City of College Station’s
spring adult kickball leagues begins Feb. 21
and runs through March 4. Mixed and co-
ed leagues are available with games played
on Wednesday nights from March through
May. Participants must be at least 16 years
old and the cost is $375 per team. Teams
will play a nine-game schedule.

Jan. 31 - Feb. 11
Girls Spring Softball Registration
Registration for the City of College
Station and Brazos Valley Girls Softball
Association’s Girls Spring Softball leagues
begins Jan. 31 and continues through
Feb. 11. Five leagues are available for girls
from 5-14 years old – 6-Under, 8-Under,
10-Under, 12-Under and 14-Under. All
teams will play an eight-game schedule.
Cost is $60 per person and participants
are not required to be College Station
residents. Teams will be created under an
evaluation/draft system and players will be
selected by coaches.

Arcadia Publishing Company that explores
the history of towns throughout the United
States. Boykin assisted Davis in obtaining
many of the book’s photos from the city’s
Project HOLD website (HOLD.cstx.gov), an
online database of historical material.
The monthly lectures are videotaped and
broadcast weekly on CSTV-19 (Suddenlink).

Feb 14 - Feb. 25
Warrant Amnesty Roundup
A warrant amnesty period has been
scheduled for Feb. 14-25 to allow citizens
with outstanding warrants to avoid paying
a $50 (per case) warrant fee if fines are
paid in full.
Local law enforcement officials will
conduct a warrant roundup from Feb.
28-March 11. Citizens who failed to pay
their fines during the designated amnesty
period will be arrested.
In the last warrant roundup in November,
College Station Municipal Court cleared
337 people with warrants totaling more
than $116,000.

A valentine dance for older adults will be
from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10 at the

Senior Day at the Capitol
Older adults can celebrate their
contributions to the great state of Texas
with Senior Day at the Capitol on Tuesday,
Feb. 8.
The event includes a bus trip to Austin and a
10:30 a.m. rally on the steps of the state capitol.

Exploring History Lunch
Glenn D. Davis, author of the pictorial
book “Images of America: College Station,”
will speak at the Exploring History Lunch
Lecture on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at the
College Station Conference Center, located
at 1300 George Bush Drive.
The event starts at 11:30 a.m., and a light
lunch will be served for $5. Reservations
are required and can be made by calling

A former bureau chief for United Press
International in Japan, Davis teaches
journalism at Texas A&M and Blinn
College. He grew up in the College Station
