Neighborhood Safety Tips
While no neighborhood is immune to
crime, following these tips can help keep
your family and neighbors safe:
• Know where your children are going.
• Help your children learn important
phone numbers.
• Limit where your children can go in
the neighborhood.
• Pick a safe house in the neighborhood
where your children can go for help.
• Know your children’s friends.
• Teach children to settle arguments
with words, not fists.
• Work together with your neighbors on
watching the neighborhood.
Internet Safety
Many children have access to the Internet
through their schools, libraries, community
centers, and home. Though it is a powerful
educational tool, the Internet can also be
dangerous. So keep these tips in mind:

Kids Klub Afterschool Program

City of College Station and the College
Station Independent School District, offers

grade children within the College Station
Independent School District.
The program provides a safe and stress-
free place for children to play, wholesome
snacks, vigorous physical activity, and
relaxation. The program offers 177 days
of afterschool care from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
each day.
Activities also include large and small group
games, enrichment clubs and homework
assistance time. To learn more, go to
cstx.gov/kidsklub or call 979-764-3831.
Fall Lawn Care Tips
The fall is the best time of year to fertilize
your lawn and control weeds. Healthy
lawns help area lakes and streams, and
thick grass helps prevent soil erosion. By
soaking up rainwater, lawns decrease the
amount of stormwater runoff funneling
pollutants into lakes and streams.
Here’s how to keep your fall lawn healthy:
• Mow. Cut grass at 2-3 inches height.
• Water. Lawns still need regular watering
to maintain plant health and survive
winter conditions.
• Fertilize. Fertilizer provides grass with
nutrients for spring growth. Water for
1-2 hours after application.
• Test soil. Find out what your soil needs
to maintain healthy grass, especially
when a lawn may need phosphorus.
• Control weeds. Weeds should be
removed by hand or spot-treated with
herbicide.
• Sweep. Remove and reuse lawn care
products that fall on streets, sidewalks
and driveways.
Here’s how to recycle your leaves:
• Compost. Composting recycles nutrients
and helps keep leaves out of streets and
storm sewers.
• Mulch. You can use leaves, whole or
shredded by a power mower, as winter
or spring mulch.
• Mow. If you have less than 2 inches
of leaves covering your lawn, make
several passes over them with a power
mower. Shredding them provides your
grass with valuable nutrients.
• Bag. Rake and bag your leaves for pickup
by city crews.
Recycling Extravaganza
