Christmas Tree Recycling
the other “Holiday Tradition”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Continue the giving spirit after Christmas
by giving back to the environment. Recycle
your Christmas tree by leaving it on your
curb from Dec. 27 to Jan. 7.
Recycled trees are either composted or
chipped and spread through the parks.
The chips help alleviate soil compaction
caused by foot traffic, reduce soil erosion
and provide nutrients to the soil.
Trees must be set at the curb by 8 a.m. on
your neighborhood’s brush day. Artificial
snow, decorations and tree stands must be
removed from the trees. If you don’t know
when your brush day is, visit cstx.gov/
sanitation or call 979.764.3690.
Celebrate a Greener Holiday
According to the Environmental Protection
Agency, the garbage produced by an
average U.S. household increases by 25
percent during the holiday season. You
can help curb this number by planning
ahead and following these tips:
December 2010

Winter energy saving tips
College Station Utilities offers these tips
to help you save energy and money, this
winter:
• Lower your thermostat to 68 degrees
to save on heating costs.
• Replace your return air filter at least
once a month.
• Use space heaters for only short
periods to “knock off” the chill of a
room or small space.
• Have your heater or furnace serviced
to ensure that it is operating properly.
• Check weather-stripping and
thresholds on doors and windows and
replace or repair when necessary.
• Open blinds and shades during sunny
days to take advantage of the sun’s
natural heat. Close them on overcast
days to hold in heat.
• Set your water heater temperature at
120 degrees.
• Fix leaky faucets and toilets. A hot
water leak can waste both energy and
water.

CSU Electric Services Department at
