CITY OF COLLEGE STATION
and Recreation Director had this to say,
“I know that I can always sleep bet-
ter at night because we are fortunate
enough to have in College Station one
of the top lifeguard staffs in the nation;
always on duty and ready to respond
when needed.”
College Station staff were congratu-
lated for their commitment to “pro-
fessional excellence” and their desire
to “make a difference” in the aquatic
industry.
Don’t forget about summer swim les-
sons! Classes meet nine times per two-
week session, Monday through Friday
for 25-45 minutes. The goal of this
program is to provide swimming in-
struction to all ages (6 months to adult)
to keep them safe in, on, and around
water and to teach what to do in an
aquatic emergency.

College Station Parks and Recre-
ation Department’s Aquatics Division
is known for being an award winning
operation. Over the years they have
consistently show superiority in their
operations as evidenced by their many
awards. Recently the division, under
the direction of Pools Supervisor Vera
Vowell, once again received top hon-
ors with the 2008 Season Gold Interna-
tional Aquatic Safety Award.
The international status makes the
award an even greater honor. This
award is given for those facilities that
consistently exceed audit criteria for
aquatic safety. It is important to note
that only the top 20% of Ellis and As-
sociates clients score well enough to
receive this award. College Station citi-
zens and guests are consistently being
afforded the highest degree of swim-
mer protection currently available in
the aquatic industry.

Salamanca, Mexico Visits
College Station –––––––––
A group of 9 visitors from Salamanca, Mexico
recently visited our community as part of the
Bryan/College Station Sister Cities program.
Their goals for the trip were to explore
possible economic exchanges including
the possibility of an American company
installation in Salamanca or export of their
local products to the Brazos Valley. They
also wished to promote tourism and cultural
exchanges through their visit to both cities.
In addition to visiting a number of
local businesses and attending various
organization meetings, the delegation
went to the College Station City Council
on March 26. College Station Mayor Ben
White and Bryan Mayor Mark Conlee read
a proclamation proclaiming March 26
as Salamanca day. Gifts were exchanged
between the Municipal President of
Salamanca and the Mayor of College Station.

Lanscaping For Beauty &
Savings –––––––––––––––
Correct selection and placement of trees and
shrubs adds not only beauty to your home
but can actually assist in saving you dollars on
your utility bill.
Native trees and plants are accustomed
to our local soils and climate so they need
less watering. Properly placed trees and
plants can keep your home cooler in hot
summers and block the wind in winter
months. Planting trees that lose their leaves
in winter on the southern and eastern sides
of the house provide shade in summer while
shedding their leaves in winter to provide
needed heating from the sunlight. Planting
evergreen trees and shrubs on the northern
and western sides of the house provide a
natural winter block during winter months.
Vines, trained on a trellis, work well as sun
blocks in areas with limited ground space.
Shading patios and driveways helps to
reduce radiant heat and heat conduction
through walls and windows and can actually
reduce wall temperatures up to 29 degrees.
For safety, always remember to call 1-800-
344-8377 (DIG TESS) at least 2 working days
before undertaking any landscaping task to
locate underground lines.
