Inside College Station
June 2008
From the City of College Station Public Communications Department • College Station, Texas
Water Conservation… Energy
Conservation… Waste Re-
duction… Green Building/Land
Use… Air Quality… Those will be
the five key components of the
College Station’s “Green Col-
lege Station” campaign. The city
plans roll existing environmen-
tally friendly programs and the
creation of new initiatives under
the new campaign’s umbrella to
help educate the community.
College Station’s commitment to
the effort was evident as on April
24th the City Council appointed
an eight-member “Technical Task
Force” to help oversee the green
efforts. The task force includes
experts in emissions reduction,
storm water management, xeri-
scaping, and “green” construc-
tion.
In addition to educating the com-
munity and encouraging residents
to use city environmental pro-
grams, the city has committed to
a “municipal leadership program”
which is highlighted by:
• Energy consumption reduction
in all city facilities over the
next 5-7 years.
• Follow Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design
(LEED) standards for new and
remodeled City facilities.
• Migrating the fleet vehicles to
hybrid vehicle where applicable
• Water reduction at city facili-
ties through improved irriga-
tion practices, efficient plumb-
ing fixtures, and water reuse.
A good example of the impact
of “Green College Station” is the
existing Energy Audit program,
managed by College Station Utili-
ties. Through 172 on-site inspec-
tions in 2007, there was annual
savings of about $205 per cus-
tomer.
