her of absences when possible. She stated that more of the Texas A&M athletic schedule has been released, but the exact location and dates of home games are still undetermined. Chair
Harvell reported that she met with the Brazos Valley Memorial Board, and that they seem very receptive to supporting 75th anniversary efforts. She indicated that the VFW would also
be a good organization to contact.
She then repeated her request for further volunteers to assist with 75th activities, through offering to organize some aspect of activities and recruit applicable volunteers, or through
volunteering. She reported that Anne Boykin will chair the homecoming/reunion committee.
5. Committee Reports
a. Public Relations and Marketing
Committee discussed public relations and marketing strategies. Mike Neu passed out a list of promotional items. He indicated that networking and radio spots will be effective. Donna
Pittman added that the noon television show is especially effective at reaching seniors, who often have materials to contribute. Chair Harvell added that newspapers are useful for the
same reason.
b. Exhibits- Bush Library
Mike Neu reported that planning of the Bush Library exhibit is being ongoing. Chair Harvell noted that ideas developed for Bush exhibits may be useful for other 75th projects. Committee
discussed several topics for developing exhibits.
Committee discussed resources for interpreting the commercial history of College Station. Committee noted specific developments such as Redmond Terrace and Culpepper Plaza, as well as
specific businesses, notably Madeley Pharmacy. Mike Neu requested any available images of storefronts. Jerry Cooper reported that he is in possession of a collection of historic images
from Richard Gunn, of businesses, some in large format, others in 35mm.
Committee discussed options for interpreting the history of city services. Jerry Cooper mentioned that a historic fire truck from 1942 may be available. Mike Neu noted that if the fire
truck is not practicable, other vehicles may be available for use.
TAMU history was discussed. Mike Neu stated that the history of the Aggie bonfire is being developed for an exhibit. He added that the Corps Center and M.D. Marshall are working together
to develop content for the history of the Corp of Cadets. Marshall was not available to update further at this time. Jerry Cooper stated that he would donate of the red, white and blue
out that occurred after the events of September 11th.
Committee discussed quality of life content. Mike Neu stated that the exhibit could show videos of content on loop. He speculated that the Arts Council may be able to partner.
Committee discussed utilizing oral histories and interviews for history-related content. Committee favored using actual footage as well as content from interviews to develop exhibits.
As well as using existing material and conducting additional interviews.
Donna Pittman reported that her museum has experience conducting oral histories, and suggested strategizing efforts to limit the number of interviews to a manageable number. She suggested
interviewing residents who may have been in College Station at the time of its founding, as well as the oldest residents. She stated that she has some material that may be useful. Don
Barber suggested the census as a likely source for possible interview subjects. Ben White offered to attempt to find long-standing residents through his connections as Community health
Liaison to St. Joseph. Several possible names were mentioned for possible interviews: notably local teaches such as Miss Knowles, Miss Lott, Mr. McGruder, Miss Johnson, and Miss Parsons.
Mike Neu suggested coordinating interviews through Public Communications in order to avoid repeatedly interviewing the same people.
Committee discussed any existing collections of oral history interviews. Jacob Morris reported that Project HOLD has a collection of interviews, some already transcribed and some recordings
yet to be transcribed. Morris reported that he will contact the TAMU Anthropology Department to recruit students to assist with transcriptions for the 75th, and suggested that committee
members contact him in order to determine best prioritization for transcriptions.
