HomeMy WebLinkAboutMEETING NOTES 75TH ANNIVERSARY_03_11_11/ 75TH ANNIVERSARY PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING NOTES College Station Conference Center 1300 George Bush Drive March 11, 2011 NEXT BROWN BAG MEETING: April 8, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. The mission of the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee is to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the City of College Station, home of Texas A&M University, by celebrating the past, honoring the present, and embracing the future. In attendance: Linda Harvell (chair), Anne Boykin, Patricia Cleere, Jerry Cooper, Tracy Paine. (Small but effective!) Call to Order. Linda welcomed the committee at 11:05 a.m. Welcome Visitors/Hear Visitors. - No new faces present. Jerry Cooper – Newsletter Idea; Jerry presented several newsletter ideas for promoting the interest in the 75th anniversary and gathering history. His hometown, Texas City is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary and has been publishing a quarterly newsletter to promote the events and solicit history. Stories of the city’s past could be featured in the newsletter, as well. The newsletter could be available online or through email. A limited number of copies could be printed for those who want to pick them up. Overview of February 11 meeting – Linda reported that the February meeting was most productive and full of energy which was mirrored by those present today. Anne Boykin – Book Project; Anne reported that she and Jim Railey, Donnning Publishing Company representative, met with one of the possible book sponsors. The meeting went well and they are waiting to hear back in the next week or so. Discussion: Event Time Line; At this point, the group launched into brainstorming and free association. Below are the notes from our random tangents. Heritage programs office will work on city history displays, both permanent and portable, to be used at various events through the 2012-2013 year. Oct. 19, 2012 – Kick-off for book sales. Oct. 18-19, 2013 – Weekend of events centered at American Pavilion; already reserved. Possible Events: Gala & awards presentation; homecoming; fun run; tail gate cook-off; time-capsule presentation and burial; Time capsule discussion – Steel (1’x2’x1’) box placed in a vault at Veterans Park along with a tree dedication; surface area covered with bricks with sponsor’s names and steel benches. Vault would be topped with a granite marker and a plaque with a brief CS history narrative. Adjourn - Meeting adjourned somewhere around 1:45 p.m. Miscellaneous Notes: Suggestion from Larry Holt via E-mail Research and mark, with a small medallion or engraving, the graves of deceased mayors, council members, city employees and/or teachers and CSISD employees.
