2009 Summer Reading.Club Summary
Larry J Ringer Library
Summer Reading Club 2009 was highly successful at the Larry J Ringer Library. Not only was
there an increase in the number of children registered at the Ringer Library, there was also a
significant increase in the number of children/teens completing their gameboards and receiving
their final prizes. A total of 1818 signed up for gameboards in 2009 were as the total
registered in 2008 was only 1576. The most rewarding part for the staff was the increase in the
completion of those gameboards which went from 514 in 2008 to 822 in 2009. The books given
as final prizes were all provided by the Friends of the Library which was able to use the profits
from the 2008 Scholastic Book Fair to provide books for both the Bryan and Ringer Library.
Kendra 4rkins planned and implemented the entire Children's, 'Tweens and Teen programs for
the Larry J Ringer Library. The programs were highly successful with a total attendance of over
4,000 at 28 programs. The Outdoor Carnival on May 30th had approximately 900 attend. This
program was also sponsored by Atmos Energy who provided hotdogs, drinks and chips as well
as volunteers. Big Rigs continues to be a popular program with over 650 viewing a variety of
trucks and emergency and City of College Station vehicles. Animal Day in July was a big hit with
live snakes, a large tortoise and a variety of other animals to view..
The Teen program continues to draw the smallest number of attendees, but the "Twilight
Party" with a.viewing of the popular movie was the biggest draw of 39 teens. While a very
successful Ice Cream Party drew 70 'Tweens. Parents and 'Tweens were excited to have
programs just for them and comments/suggestions received by staff were requesting that we
continue to provide special programs for this age group who find the Children's activities to
childish and they are not yet ready to fit in with the older group.
Our newest Youth Services Librarian, Emily Bennett was responsible for the coordination of
over 80 volunteers. She did a great job. This summer was also her first year to participate in
our Summer Reading Club and she handled her responsibilities very well.
Thanks to the Friends of the Bryan+College Station Library System for another successful
Summer Reading Club.
