A RECOMMENDATION FROM THE BRYAN PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
TO THE BRYAN CITY COUNCIL REQUESTING THAT THE CARNEGIE
LIBRARY BUILDING, DESIGNATED AS A HISTORY CENTER, BECOME
A BRANCH OF THE BRYAN PUBLIC LIBRARY.
WHEREAS, the City Council by Resolution dated Feb. 25 , 1991 ,
designated the Carnegie Library as a History Center for Bryan
and the local community; and,
WHEREAS, the Bryan Public Library Board is charged with
encouraging the development of the public library; and,
WHEREAS, the Bryan Public Library building, now in its 23rd
year, is in need of additional space for a growing collection
and services; and,
WHEREAS, the Carnegie Library, operated by the Bryan Library
as a History Center could house the current Genealogy
Collection, the Texas History Collection, the Rare Book
Collection, the extensive local history files , the Cavitt
House photo collection, the microform collection of census
® and related genealogical subjects , and many other items; and,
WHEREAS , the Bryan Library has the knowledge and skill to
plan, organize and operate a History Center as a branch of
the library; and,
THEREFORE: BE IT resolved that the members of the Library
Board, in cooperation with other groups , recommend this
action in the best interests of the public library and the
community.

PROPOSAL FOR THE
CARNEGIE LIBRARY AS A HISTORY CENTER
BRANCH OF THE BRYAN/COLLEGE STATION PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM
JANUARY 1992
MISSION
The Carnegie Library History Center will search for, acquire, analyze, describe, catalog, preserve,
exhibit, maintain and store documents of lasting value that document the history of the Brazos Valley
from before its founding to the present.
SCOPE OF SERVICES AND COLLECTIONS
TWO YEAR PLAN
As the local history collection of the Bryan/College Station Public Library System, the Center will
collect and preserve materials about Bryan and College Station, Brazos County and its surrounding
counties, making them available for research. To this end, information about local governments,
businesses, residents, institutions, and neighborhoods will be collected. Thus the Carnegie Library
History Center would provide a wealth of information to the student and amateur researcher, as well as
the scholar. The Carnegie History Center would be open the same hours as the Bryan Public Library.
SSCOPE OF MATERIALS IN EXISTENCE IN BRYAN PUBLIC LIBRARY
An archivist and three assistants would be hired to begin the transference and organization of materials
from the libraries to the Carnegie, and began collecting materials from various sources. The Carnegie
would immediately house the following collections:
\Genealogical Collection of more than 4,000 books.
\More than 1,000 Texas History books
\Cavitt Photo Collection
\Ana Ludmilla Gee Ballet Collection of 51 books and pieces of materials
\Texas collection of Sanborn and historical maps
\Texas Reference Collection of 360 books
\Rare Book Collection of 400 books
\Bound Periodicals, such as Southwestern Historical Quarterly and Texana, and other unbound, Texas
Journal, Stirpes, Insite, Texas Historian, etc.
\Indexed local history files
4111 \Unedited chapters of Brazos County History, Rich Past, Bright Future, as well as photographs from
1986 publication
\Early day merchant business journals

NEW SERVICES
Expand to second floor of Carnegie Library.
Expand hours open to public.
Develop programs to present to community organizations,
schools, etc.
Develop displays to be used by school teachers for classrooms.
Offer courses in genealogy searching for teen agers. (This course could be started in the first year we
open to attract the school age person.)

MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING
OF THE BRYAN LIBRARY BOARD
November 17 , 1992
•1 . On the 17th of November , 1992 the Library Board of the City of Bryan,
Texas convened in a regular session at the College Station library at 5 : 15
p .m. The following members were present : -

3 . There were no visitors per se.
4 . The minutes of the September meeting were approved as mailed .
5 . The statistics for September and October were provided in the mailout .
6 . There was no committee report from the Historic Preservation ad hoc
committee .
7 . The Librarian ' s report included comments about the Carnegie Restoration
project . A contract has been signed with Wagner & Klein of Fredericksburg
to prepare a master plan for the restoration of the historic building .
8 . After a brief business meeting, the Library Board toured the Branch
facilitywith Ms . Alford . It was noted that space is at a premium! The
workroom/office is crowded with three desks , all supplies , and new
acquisitions . All materials are processed in this small space . New
shelving to finish one wall in the library will be ordered by January 1 .
9 . The group discussed with Mr . Shear and Mrs . Mounce any future plans to
expand the branch . It is expected that the College Station City Council
will address the issue this year .
10 . The board members requested that Mrs . Mounce ask Dr . John Blackburn tc
invite the city manager to the Jan . 19 , 1993 meeting in order to get
acquainted and to discuss the use of the Carnegie Library as a history
center and a branch of the Bryan Library .
11 . The meeting adjourned at 6 : 00 p .m.

The Texas State Library requires that public libraries !
submit an annual report within 90 days after the close of a I '
fiscal year. The information is used to accredit public _ -_ _ _
libraries, based on criteria established by the library -
Systems Act,for accrecitation by the Texas State
Library. This is a summary of the report, comparing previous years,
as far back as 1981 when Iwas named City Librarian. The first NOTE: No out of county fees were charged until 1982.
column shows the per cern increase/decease of the past 11 years, comparing Late charges were increased Dec. 1982.
