On the 17th of October 1984, the Library Board of the City of Bryan, Texas, convened in regular session in the regular place in the Reading Area of the Library Building, at 5 p.m. with the following members present: ATTENDANCE Member Present Number of meetings Number of meetings held since attended since appointment appointment Mrs. C. Also presentwere Mrs. Clara B. Mounce, City Librarian, Mrs. Jerilynn Williams, Associate City Librarian, and Mrs. Mary Ann Montoya, secretary to the City Librarian. • 3. There were no visitors, 4. The minutes of the September 19 meeting were corrected to include the official thank you from the Library Board to Mr. Tim Adams. 5. In a discussion of the statistics report, Mrs. Mounce stated that the children's circulation has shown an increase each month from last year. Mrs. Mounce also gave a brief explanation of LSCA funds and mentioned that the library has already spent half ofthe funds. 6. There were no committee reports. 7. In the Librarian's Report, Mrs. Mounce called attention to the College Station Council minutes that mention the increased money allocation. A copy of the minutes were given to each of the board members. She also mentioned that Shiloh Baptist Church's book was published and showed the board the library's copy of the book. Mrs. Pruitt was very active in coordinating the publication. She also discussed the letter sent to the Bryan City Council regarding the parking lot, and passed out a copy of the' letter to each board member. 111 Vis. Mounce stated that the College Station support funds were due soon and that the College Station mayor is releasing a news report stating that he intends to revive the committee looking into the College Station libary needs. The College Station mayor wants to have a cooperative effort with the City of Bryan. One-third of this library's usage is from College Station patrons. Mrs. Mel Pruitt raised the question, "Is the Library Board doing all we can?" It was suggested that maybe the Board could call the College Station mayor and say the Library Board would like to be a member of their committee. It was discussed that the Library Board should take the initiative and make some recommendations to the City of College Station. Mrs. Allen mentioned it would be a good idea to write to the Mayor:-of College Station saying that some (all or any) members of the Library Board would be willing to serve with their committee. Mrs. Mounce mentioned that the reader-printer is working and is very versatile - the charge is 25Q a copy.. The copy machine is 15Q a copy. Mrs. Mounce mentioned that the IBM PC is here and running. Several staff members will attend training sessions in Austin to learn how to use this computer. Mrs. Mounce announced that the Friends of the Library Book Sale's profits were $5,850. 8. A. Unfinished Business - Literacy Program. Mrs. Williams mentioned the October 6 tutor training with Mrs. Maija Weimer. There were eleven volunteer tutors: school teacher, several homemakers, college students, pharmacists, and others. To date there are four students. The tutoring schedules are for one to one and a half hours, two times a week for six to eight weeks. On October 16 there was a Literacy Workshop here in the library. One of the things mentioned at the workshop was that we should set reasonable goals. Some contacts for this program will be Mr. Marvin Dixon, Adult Education Director from Bryan. The tutors will start at whatever point the student needs to start. Some of the reasons listed for wanting to read were: job related - better job; read to children - can help them; and wanted to read the Bible - or something to do with church. 9. A. New Business - Library Walk In Count. Monday, October 22., will start the walk in count for the library. This is the third year it has been done. Mrs. Mounce mentioned the need for volunteers and any library board member willing to volunteer will be appreciated. This year, the walk in count will also include a parking survey. There will also be a breakdown as to adult or children. B. New Business - Stack Survey Committee. The committee for space needs will consist of Judge Carolyn Ruffino and Mr. Ed Madeley. This committee will do a study of the stack survey. C. New Business - Citizens Appreciation Day. Citizens Appreciation Day for Bryan will be December 9, 2 to 5 p.m. Last year the library did a puppet show. Mrs... Mounce is on the Citizens Appreciation Day committee. Plans are for the library to do something for this day. • 9. D. New Business - Children's Puppet Show. The Children's Puppet Show will be a special production of "Witch Bazooza," by Librarians Robbin Olsen and Glenda Duncan. Several presentations will be given. E. New Business - November Library Board Meeting. It was agreed that the November board meeting will be November 28 because of the Thanksgiving holidays. 10. Request for items for agenda. 11.
