Home My WebLink About04/11/1969 - Regular Agenda Packet - Bryan College Station Library System Advisory Board April 11 , 1969 40111 The Carnegie Library Board of Trustees held its regular meeting on April 11, 1969 at 5:00 P. M. in the Library. Mr. Edsel Burkhart, President of the Board, presided. Other members present were Mrs. Dan Hudson, Dr. Paul Crawford, Mr. W. D. Dunn, Dr. Tom King, and Mr. Bookman Peters. Mrs. Hazel Richardson, the Librarian, was present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Note was made of a drop in circulation over last year. As the drop was in Bookmobile circulation, this was attributed mostly to the fact that all the schools now have their own libraries and are fast adding books to them. Mr. Dunn moved that the book order be approved. Mrs. Hudson seconded the motion which passed. Dr. King, reporting for the Building Committee, said that at last check on the progress of the new building, everything was on schedule and that we should be able to move in by summer. The Librarian reported the passage of The Library Systems Act by the 61st Legislature. It was signed into law by Governor Smith at 10:00 A. M. on March 20, 1969 in the presence of the sponsors, Senator Jack Hightower, , Senator Aikin and Representative Joe Shannon. The libraries of Texas were represented by Dorman Winfrey, Director , Texas State Library; Sam Whitten, President T. L. A. , and members of the Legislative Task Force headed by Mrs. Lillian Bradshaw, Director, Dallas Public Library, Mrs. Richardson told the Board that she had been called, written, and spoken to at T. L. A. by the members of the Legislative Task Force; by Dr. Winfrey; and by Mr. Whitten who expressed their appreciation for the work the Bryan Carnegie Library Board, The Friends of the Carnegie Library, various organizations in Bryan and College Station, and interested citizens had done to make the passage of the bill possible. Bryan will host a Trustee Workshop on May 5th. The trustees attending will be from Brazos, Burleson, Washington, Robertson, Milani, Lee, and Falls County. Mrs. Sandra Gray, our Field Services Consultant from the State Library, will conduct the workshop which will be held from 9:30 to 3:30 P. M. in the Medallion Room of the Utilities Building. The members of the Board looked at the seven new additions to the Art Lending Collection which were ordered from the New York Graphic Society. These pictures are the gift of the Beta Sigma Phi Council. The Librarian reported on her attendance at the Texas Library Association in Houston March 26 - March 29. She emphasized her attendance at an all day consideration of Library Automation. She felt that in the near future with the growth of our library's circulation and book collection and the phenomenal growth of the community, the Bryan Library should be considering automation. The Board advised that the Librarian should study the various types used in libraries in communities of this size , particularly in the circulation departments, visit these libraries and see how it works, with an eye to planning and programming. Dr. Crawford introduced a discussion of the need for audio-visual equip- ment in the new library. He moved that we evaluate such equipment as was needed and order in amount not to exceed the provision made for it in the budget. Dr. King seconded this motion which passed. The Librarian announced plans for National Library Week which will be April 21 - April 26. The meeting adjourned at 6:25 P. M.
