L ry. Those present were Mr. Edsel Burkhart , President, Mrs. Dan Hudson, Dr. Paul Crawford, Mr. W. D. Dunn, and Mr. Bookman Peters. Mr. Fred Sandlin, the City Manager, was present , and Mrs. Hazel Richardson, the Librarian. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as read. in circulation In an examination of the monthly statistics a drop/was noticed over last year, which could be explained by the Library's being open one day less this year than last and by the lateness in the month for the beginning of the Bookmobile 's school visits. Mr. Dunn moved the approval of the book orders for October. Mrs. Hudson seconded the motion which passed. In the absence of Dr. King, Chairman of the Building Committee, Mr. Sandlin reported on the progress of the new building. In spite of the recent two to three weeks delay in the concrete pouring, he estimated that if everything from now on went according to schedule , the building would be completed by July 1969. He reported on his investigation of ,Suniland's bid on the draperies, Suniland had confirmed their bid. The chairs News Office Supply had bid on (substitutes for Herman Miller) which were subject to examination and testing had been pronounced satisfactory by Mr. Van Buren. Dr. Crawford suggested thatit would appear desirable that an appropri- ate sign reflecting that Bryan was having a new public library be erected on the site. Constant inquiries are coming every day to the library and the Board members as to the exact location of the new building. The Board was unanimously in agreement with this suggestion. -S Dr. Crawford stated that it would be within Bryan's capacity to operate one of the most dynamic libraries in this country. He made the following suggestions, which with small increase in the budget, would be possible for greatly enlarging and expanding our services: I Creation of a business man's suite where books, papers, financial re- ports and reference service would be readily available to business men of the area. Inauguration of an Art Lending Collection for children similar to the one we have for adults. It is likely that this collection would be con- tributed to the Library by one of Bryan's service clubs. r Substantial increase in the record collection in classical records, folk music , and language records. Inauguration of a Family Night on Thursday nights with programs and show- ing of movies appropriate to the seasons of the year. (/' Saturday afternoon at the opera -- similar to program in the Boston and Detroit Libraries -- with recordings and broadcasts of the Metropolitan opera. Programmed showing of 35 mm movies with and without sound. Promotion of the Memorial Books i. e. , making available to the public information about this service and how it is conducted. The meeting adjourned at 6:00 P. M.
