Members Present: E.E. Burns, Joyce Davis, Rick Heaney, Edgar Jones, Robert Meyer,
Haskell Monroe, Neal Nutall, Donald Pirwitz, Raymond Reed, Colleen Risinger and
Yvonne Stevens
Members Absent: Patricia Boughton, Dorothy Hernandez, Jack Hernandez, Laura Holmes,
Doreen Todd and Joanna Yeager
Staff Present: Steve Beachy, Director Parks and Recreation, Ric Ploeger, Assistant
Director of Parks and Recreation, David Gerling, Recreation Superintendent and Marci
Rodgers
I. Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:02am by Robert Meyer,
Chairman
II. Hear visitors No visitors
III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on November 27, 2006 Ray Reed
made the motion that the minutes be approved. Haskell Monroe seconded the
motion. The motion passed.
IV. Discussion, consideration and possible action on Senior Center Conceptual
Design project presented by Tom Parker, Katie Collier and Ray Holliday,
Architects with BRW Tom Parker began the discussion with a brief description of
what would be presented. The design includes a site plan, floor plan, elevations,
suggested materials and scale of the project. Ray Holliday discussed the site plan
and pointed out the flood plane and borrow pit which were factors used to
determine the location of the building. The building is designed to overlook a
kidney shaped pond. Hiking paths were shown as an extension of the current paths
in central park to the senior center complex. The main entry is covered and allows
for vans and busses. A separate and screened service entry is planned for catering
vehicles. Parking areas were discussed and suggestions from the committee and
staff included adding shade trees and parking for busses. The building has an
inviting Texas theme with 12' wrap around porches. Suggested materials for the
building include limestone on the exterior with a medal roof.
Haskell Monroe made the motion that the design presented be approved by the
committee. Rick Heaney seconded the motion. The committee approved
unanimously. The presentation will be made to City Council on Thursday, January
11, 2007 at 3:00pm.
V. Discussion, consideration and possible action on information brochure of new
senior center. Marci Rodgers reported that she had met with Mary Morse, Graphic
Designer for the City of College Station, to discuss an information brochure for the
new senior center. Suggestions from the committee for the brochure included:
• Schematic site plan and floor plan
• Explanation of need for a senior center
• Population projections
• Website
VI. Discussion, consideration and possible action of Senior Services Coordinator
report regarding upcoming programs and events. (report attached)
Marci would like to meet with the goals sub-committee in January to discuss 2007
goals for the Senior Advisory Committee.

The November population estimate for the City of College Station is 84,028.

Programs offered in December:
• Three Christmas Light Tours: Two busses traveled with residents from Lulac
Oakhill, Villas of Rock Prairie and Terrace Pines. Tour included driving throught
Christmas in the Park and Santa's Wonderland. One group started with Holidays
in the Rotunda at the Bush Library.
• Singing With Seniors:
College Station ISD Headstart children sang to the residents at Lulac Oakhill, Villas
of Rock Prairie. The children also sang to the seniors at Lincoln Center
• Christmas Dance:
36 attended the dance held on Thursday, December 14th at the College Station
Confernce Center.
• Xtra Education Classes finalized:
The brochure will be ready for in January and registration begins January 16, 2007.
Classes and programs for seniors include: computer, bridge, digital cameras, photo
preservation, genealogy, Senior Police and Fire Academy and more.
Programs coming in January:
• January 3, 2007 Computer Club meets the first Wednesday at the Carter Creek
Training room from 9:00-10:30am
• January 11, 2007 City Council Meeting. Presentation by BRW Architects on
Senior Center Conceptual design project.
• January 16th Xtra Education registration for classes begins at the College Station
Parks and Recreation Department.
• January 24th Speak to the Brazos Valley Shriner Organization on Senior
Programs.
• 42 players will meet on the second and fourth Thursday at 9:30am at the Teen
Center
• Friday Bridge meets on the first and third Friday at 9:00am at the Teen Center
• Computer Classes begin week of January 29th
