New Municipal Cemetery and Aggie Field of Honor
Project Update
On Wednesday September 27, 2006, the College Station Cemetery Advisory Committee,
Parks and Recreation Staff members, and representatives from Edwards and Kelcey
toured the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas. The tour was
arranged to help assist the Cemetery Committee and Parks and Recreation staff as they
begin the process of developing a Master Plan for the new municipal cemetery.
The Killeen cemetery was opened in late fall 2005, and is a rare opportunity to visit and
tour a new facility. The 174 acre master planned site includes in-ground cremains and
casket spaces, a scattering area for cremains, columbariums, a committal building, visitor
center, assembly and plaza area, and administration/maintenance building.
Edwards and Kelcey was selected as the top candidate that responded to a Request for
Qualifications for the design work for the new cemetery. The Edwards and Kelcey
Professional Services contract is scheduled for approval during the October 12, 2006
council meeting.
The new College Station municipal cemetery will be located on 57 acres on the northwest
corner of F. M. 2818 and F.M. 60. and will include approximately 20 acres designated as
the Aggie Field of Honor. This area will be marketed to former students and families,
faculty, and friends of Texas A&M University. Several public input meetings and design
charrettes will be scheduled in the next few months to assist in the development of the
Master Plan. This plan will include the location and scope of Phase I of the project that
will be approximately 10 acres in size (5 acres municipal cemetery and 5 acres Aggie
Field of Honor). As Phase I of the project is better known, a separate contract will be
completed with Edwards and Kelcey to complete the final design work and construction
documents for Phase I. A dedication ceremony is being planned for April 21, 2008.

10-F. 2 Parks should be easy to access and open to public view so as to benefit area
development, enhance the visual character of the city, protect public safety, and minimize
conflict with adjacent land uses. The following guidelines should be used in designing
parks and adjacent development:
(a) Where physically feasible, park sites should be located adjacent to greenways and/or schools
in order to encourage both shared facilities and the potential co-development of new sites.
