HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/23/2005 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, May 23, 2005 College Station Teen Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. 10:00am Minutes Members Present: E.E. Burns, Laura Holmes, Joe LeCour, Robert Meyer, Haskell Monroe, Neal Nutall, Raymond Reed, Colleen Risinger, Dipankar Sen, Yvonne Stevens and Betty Wilbom Members Absent: Patricia Boughton and Frank Camplone Call to order. The meeting was called to order by Robert Meyer, Chairman at 10:01am II. Hear visitors. No visitors present. III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on April 25, 2005. Raymond Reed made the motion that the minutes be approved. Haskell Monroe seconded the motion. The motion passed. IV. Report, discussion and possible action regarding senior center presentation to the Parks and Recreation Board on May 17, 2005. Robert Meyer reported on the meeting with the Parks and Recreation Board where he asked for their support for a senior center and to approach City Council on this subject. He stated that the board approved a motion to support his report. Park Board members and Mr. Beachy discussed the best approach for the seniors to have their needs and concerns met. The recommendation was to have strong participation from the senior population during public input sessions for the City Center project and incorporate a senior center in the City Center Master Plan. Laura Holmes made the motion that a Senior Center Planning Committee be formed to determine what the senior population would like to see in a senior center. The sub-committee would recommend building usage and develop a program that will be attractive to seniors. It was recommended that public meetings be held to gather infoimation for use of a senior center. Haskell Monroe seconded the motion. Members appointed to the sub-committee include: Laura Holmes, Raymond Reed, Colleen Risinger, Joe LeCour and Yvonne Stevens. Members said that they would like to see informal meetings such as "Coffee with the Mayor/Council"held over the summer so that the Mayor would be familiar with the concerns of the senior population in our community. V. Seniors Expo 2005 Report. Marci Rodgers gave the report on the Seniors Expo and reminded Laura Holmes, Raymond Reed, Robert Meyer and Colleen Risinger of their shifts to work the Parks and Recreation Booth at the Expo. Duties would include: distributing information and giveaways, supervising a game with prizes and answering questions about the senior programs offered through the Parks Department. The volunteers were thanked and others encouraged to attend the event. VI. Review, discussion and possible action regarding Senior Friendly Award Robert Meyer suggested that HEB be nominated for the Senior Friendly Award for their support and sponsorship of the Seniors Expo 2005. Mr. Meyer will submit the application in June. VII. Senior Services Coordinator Report (report attached) VIII. Next meeting and agenda items: Monday,June 27, 2005 • Senior Friendly Award IX. Adjourn The committee adjourned at 11:12pm Senior Services Coordinator Report May 2005 Police and Fire Academy Presentations this month were from patrol officers explaining traffic law enforcement and accident investigations. Brian Hilton explained emergency and home disaster preparedness. The Fire Department demonstrated hazardous material clean up and equipment used. Academy participants were able to step into the gear and experience for themselves what the specially trained fire fighters feel when working in these dangerous conditions. Also scheduled this month: • Personal Safety at Home and on the Road • Patrol Procedures • Heartsaver/CPR Certification. The program will end on June 2 with the Fire Department Public Information Office , Fire Department Master Plan and the Police Department Five Year Plan and a Graduation Party. Thanks to Cindy Giedraitis for coordinating the academy for the Police and Fire Department. Ice Cream Social The social was held on Saturday, May 7th from 4:00pm-5:30pm at Central Park Pavilion. Build your own ice cream sundae and a singing quartet made for a delightful afternoon. We had 27 participants. Seniors Expo 2005 The Expo is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25th at the Brazos Center from 9:00am — 3:00pm. There will be 86 booths sharing information on businesses and organizations in our "Senior Friendly" community. Speakers schedule includes: • Healthy cooking demonstration • The Good, Bad and Ugly Investments • Enjoy a More Comfortable Retirement in Your Own Home • Getting your Legal Affairs in Order • Consumer Health Information: Is the Internet Reliable? • Medicare and You • Community Outreach: A&M Offers New Lifelong Learning Program • Identity Theft, It Could Happen to You Coming In June • June 9 The Classic Film, The Seven Year Itch, will be showing on Thursday, June 9th at 7:00pm at the George Bush Library. Transportation will be provided for seniors in College Station. • June 9 42 dominoes players wanted! Senior interested in playing 42 will meet on the second Thursday of the month at the College Station Teen Center from 9:45am-11:30am. • June 14-June 28th Free Beginning Computer Classes for Seniors will be offered at the Center for Regional Services on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on June 14-June 28th. Classes are from 10:30am-12:00noon. To register call Marci Rodgers at 764-6371. • June 13 Computers 102 Class offered on Monday and Wednesday starting June 13-29. The class will meet from 9:00am-10:30am. The cost is $45.00 and if interested please register at the College Station Parks and Recreation Department. • June 8 & 22 Computer Club for Seniors On June 8th the club meets at the College Station Utilities Training room located at 1601 Graham Rd. The speaker is William J. Roenignhk and the topic is Kodak's "Easy Share" FREEWARE introduction. On June 22nd the club meets at the Center for Regional Services computer lab located at 3991 East 29th street in Bryan.
