HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/25/2002 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting MINUTES Monday, November 25, 2002 College Station Teen Center 1520 Rock Prairie Road 10:00am Members Present: Frank Camplone, Fred Dollar, Laura Holmes, Bill Kling, Catherine Lamb, Billy Lay, Robert Meyer, Haskell Monroe, Suzanne Reynolds, Dipankar Sen, and Yvonne Stevens Members Absent: Annie Lee Finch, Neal Nutall, Betty Wilbom and Joanna Yeager Staff Present: Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator I. Call to order. The meeting was called by order by Chairman, Bill Kling at 10:00am IL Hear visitors. No visitors were present. III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on October 28, 2002. Haskell Monroe made the motion that the minutes be approved. Laura Holmes seconded the motion. The motion passed. IV. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning a recommendation for a Program Committee. The purpose of the program committee is to work with the senior services coordinator to make recommendations for programs that would serve the interest of the senior population. The members of the senior advisory committee completed a questionnaire asking for their suggestions for day trips, lecture series topics, health classes, and other programs they would like to see offered. The committee will meet with Marci Rodgers to investigate topics, speakers, tours and activities including marketing of programs and present to the advisory committee for approval. The questionnaire asked for volunteers to serve on the sub-committee. Haskell Monroe made the motion to approve Catherine Lamb, Robert Meyer, Dipankar Sen, Suzanne Reynolds and Yvonne Stevens as members of the program committee. Fred Dollar seconded the motion. The motion passed. V. Senior Services Coordinator Report (report attached) VI. Next meeting date and agenda. The next meeting will be held on Monday, December 16th at 10:00am VII. Adjourn. The meeting adjourned at 11:50am Senior Services Report November 2002 Thank you volunteers! Robert Meyer, Joanna Yeager, Laura Holmes and Betty J. Wilbom volunteered to work the Veteran's Memorial Dedication on Monday, November llth. Thank you for your time. Ballroom Dances: A dance and a lesson was held on November 14th at the College Station Conference Center. A special holiday dance and lesson will be held on Thursday, December 5th. A fox trot lesson will be taught at 6:45pm and the dance begins at 7:30pm and concludes at 10:00pm. The December 5th dance will have special entertainment by a local DJ. Cost for the lesson is $7.00 and cost for the dance is $5.00. This is a joint program with the St. Joseph Gold Medallion Club and the College Station Parks and Recreation Department. Transportation will be available to a limited number of the residents from the Villas and Lulac provided by the College Station Parks and Recreation Dept. Thanksgiving Party The residents of the Villas of Rock Prairie enjoyed a program with the Headstart children from Pebble Creek Elementary School on Thursday, November 21st at 10:00am. Cookies and punch were served to 14 residents and 12 children. The children wore their feathered headdress and paper sack vests. The headstart classes from different elementary schools will visit the seniors at Lincoln Center for a Christmas and Valentines Day party. Lulac Oakhill will have the children for a spring party in March. Xtra Education Classes Classes for the fall will conclude in the next two weeks and the Spring 2003 classes are being organized. Spring registration begins on Tuesday, January 21st. Senior Expo 2003 The planning committee will have their first meeting on Thursday, December 12th beginning at 8:30am at The Eagle. The Senior Expo is scheduled for the last Wednesday in May at the Brazos Center. Bridge Group The group met on Friday, November 15th and had five tables of players. The group has requested to change their meetings to Tuesday and move to the Teen Center on Rock Prairie Rd. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 17th from 9:30-12:30pm at the Teen Center. Anyone is welcome to play, but they must have a reservation.
