IV. Report, discussion and possible action regarding senior center presentation to
the Parks and Recreation Board on May 17, 2005. Robert Meyer reported on
the meeting with the Parks and Recreation Board where he asked for their support
for a senior center and to approach City Council on this subject. He stated that the
board approved a motion to support his report. Park Board members and Mr.
Beachy discussed the best approach for the seniors to have their needs and concerns
met. The recommendation was to have strong participation from the senior
population during public input sessions for the City Center project and incorporate
a senior center in the City Center Master Plan.
Laura Holmes made the motion that a Senior Center Planning Committee be
formed to determine what the senior population would like to see in a senior center.
The sub-committee would recommend building usage and develop a program that
will be attractive to seniors. It was recommended that public meetings be held to
gather information for use of a senior center. Haskell Monroe seconded the
motion. Members appointed to the sub-committee include: Laura Holmes,
Raymond Reed, Colleen Risinger, Joe LeCour and Yvonne Stevens.
Members said that they would like to see informal meetings such as "Coffee with
the Mayor/Council" held over the summer so that the Mayor would be familiar
with the concerns of the senior population in our community.
