TO: i 'arks & Recreation Board
FROM: Steve Beachy, Director of Parks & Recreation
SUBJECT: ITEMS OF INTEREST
L Emergency Management Academy Class 96-01 Graduates! The first
annual E.M. Academy consisted of eight four-hour classes held once a
week, which ran from January 11-February 29. Participants included 23
City employees from various departments and position levels. Topics
covered included Incident Command, Emergency Operations Center,
Emergency Shelter and Mass Care, Disaster Preparedness and Recovery,
Emergency Public Information, and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing.
2. The College Station Parks and Recreation Department receives the Texas
Recreation and Parks Society Arts and Humanities Award. This
award was presented to the department on March 5, 1996, at the annual
awards ceremony in Lubbock, Texas, for the Wolf Pen Creek
Amphitheater. Criteria for this award included the variety of activities
offered, cross section of the population served, innovativeness of the
program, interagency cooperation, the community needs it fulfills, as well
as what the program has done to expand the interest in Arts and
Humanities.
3. The Sandstone Park Dedication Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday,
April 2, 1996 at 5:30 p.m. The 15.21 acre site was acquired in 1983 and
has recently undergone extensive renovation. Funding for the
development was approved in the 1991 Bond Election. Marek Brothers
Construction, Inc., was the general contractor for the site development
and Brazos Services completed the planting of 167 trees in the park. A
matching grant from the Texas Forest Service was obtained to help with
the tree planting project. This park features the second handicap
accessible playground in College Station. Sandstone Park is located at
1700 Sebesta Road.

4. Tim Clark, Crew Leader in the South District has transferred to MIS after
nine dedicated years in the Parks and Recreation Department. The
Department wishes him the best of luck in his new position. Also,
Tommy Galvan is transferring to Public Services Fleet Maintenance as a
mechanic's helper. Tommy was an excellent and hard working grounds
worker in the South District the past two years. He will be missed.
5. The Southwood Valley and Rock Prairie Kids Klubs hosted Parents Night
on Friday, March 1. The evening's activities included a question and
answer time for the parents, and taking the parents and their children
through a typical day at Kids Klub. The turnout was quite successful,
about 25% of the parents were in attendance.
6. The Central Park concession stand recently underwent major
renovations by Facility Maintenance. Some of the renovations included
the addition of an outside stairway to allow more room in the upstairs
official's area. Air conditioners were also installed to help cool both the
upstairs and downstairs areas during the hot summer months which will
improve the working conditions of both employees and officials of the
softball leagues and tournaments. Removing the internal stairway also
allowed more space for the concession area downstairs. Congratulations
to Shannon Waddell, Concession Supervisor, who received another 100
at Central on the Health Department inspection.
)
7. The Lincoln Recreation Center Gym Floor will undergo renovation
within the next couple of days. A new gym floor will be installed and
should take about eight days to complete. Custom Sports Surfaces is the
company doing the renovation.
8. CSISD Natatorium activities are continuing with swim team, wellness
classes and the city's own fitness classes. CSISD is in the process of
addressing the slippery floors by "shot blasting" (similar to sandblasting)
during spring break. Also, the lighting and sound concerns are currently
being addressed with expected construction for those beginning in late
May.
9. A State Historic Plaque has been approved for "African American
Education in College Station" and will be erected at the Lincoln
Recreation Center. The text is currently being drafted and proofed, and
will then be sent to the foundary for casting. The dedication will take
place during the Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration next year. The exact
date will be announced closer to the time of the event.
10. College Station Teen Survey - Surveys are being distributed to all
College Station High School and Junior High School students to determine
their interests in recreation programs and facilities. This is part of the
action plan for the city council issue related to programs for youth. These
surveys will be distributed through the schools and results will be
tabulated next month.
11. Junior Girls' Fast Pitch Softball began their season last week with 18
teams. 192 girls ages 6-14 have registered for the spring season. Games
and practices are played at Bee Creek, Lemontree, and Fairview Parks.
