HomeMy WebLinkAboutCurrie Photo #3This page On 12 May 1944, 50 officers and men flying in five aircraft took off on a leaflet mission to Denmark. B-17 42-31032 JJ -B, flown by Lt Michael, was attacked by a Junkers Ju 88 which killed its two waist gunners SSgts George Barber and Robert Walker. Both TSgt Louis Hatin the radio operator, and SSgt Nicholas Mastroianni the tail gunner were badly wounded. TSgt Dan Brennan the ball turret gunner also received serious injuries as a result of the attack but succeeded in beating off the Ju 88 before shooting it down. On return to the UK the B-17 landed at RAF Friston where the dead and injured were taken off the aircraft and the flak damage inspected. Note No 2 engine has been feathered. B.
