01-10-96-6 - Resolution - 01/10/1996q so[ution RESOLUTION NO. 1-10 - 9 6 - 6 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION DECLARING ITS OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSED ABANDONMENT OF RAIL LINE IN BRAZOS AND ROBERTSON COUNTIES AS PART OF THE UNION PACIFIC/SOUTHERN PACIFIC MERGER. WHEREAS, a merger of the Union Pacific Railroad Company with the Southern Pacific Railroad Company is proposed, and; WHEREAS, the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroad Companies have announced the abandonment of a 16.2 mile section of rail line between Suman and the City of Bryan if the merger is approved, and; WHEREAS, Intermodal Accessibility and Economic Development have been identified as Strategic Issues by the College Station City Council, and; WHEREAS, the abandonment of that section of rail line would have an adverse economic impact on several existing businesses and on the Bryan-College Station community's ability to attract future business and industry desiring rail access. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of College Station, Texas that the City is opposed to the proposed abandonment of the 16.2 mile section of Southern Pacific rail line between Suman and the City of Bryan as part of the Union Pacific/Southern Pacific railroad merger. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of College Station may be supportive of the merger if written assurance to continue rail service for existing and future customers along this route is provided.
