was created April 9, 1986. It operates in accordance
with City Ordinance No 1646. The committee is made ;F
up of nine citizens, one Texas A &M University student "?:f

liaison, one College Station City Council member, and ';`,' n
two city staff liaisons. Meetings are held September :�t ,r Y ' ' `
through May, on the first Wednesday of the month. This `
committee currently meets at the College Station Parks & Recreation office in Central
Park at 1000 Krenek Tap Road. Meetings begin at 5:15pm. Due to the increasing .
popularity of this commitee, however, we are seeking a larger meeting place. We will

The mission of the Historic Preservation Committee is to "Aid in the collection and
preservation of history related to the City of College Station, and to promote the
education of the citizens on the history of this city."
The Historic Preservation Committee is involved in many areas in order to carry out its
mission. Some of these activities include: State Marker Program, Local Marker
Program, Oral History Project, Northgate Revitalization Project, Neighborhood
Integrity, and various special projects as the opportunities present themselves.

The College Station Historic Preservation Committee identifies subjects, locations,
topics, etc., that have the potential to receive either a Texas State Historical Marker
(subject marker) or a marker designating a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. A
research team is formed to prove to the State Marker Review Board, that the proposed
topic meets all the requirements for a State Marker and is worthy of marking. After the
team fully researches the subject, a narrative is written with proper documentation in
place. Maps and pictures are included in the packet. Then, it is forwarded to the Brazos
County Historical Commission for review. The County Historical Commission reviews
the application, and approves it, or returns it to the originator for revisions. Once the
Chairman agrees that the application is accurate and complete, it is sent to the Texas
Historical Commission for review and verification. The Texas Historical Commission
keeps in touch with the County Commission on the progress of the application during
this process.

Local Marker Program
College Station has a local marker program for homes and buildings. Specific
requirements for obtaining a College Station Historic Marker can be received from the
College Station Historic Preservation Committee c/o David Gerling. This program is
not very old, and the main thrust is to document the history of our area before we lose
it, so that it can be shared with future generations, students, and historians.
In the table that follows, you will fmd the homes and buildings which have been
designated as local historic sites. The homes are all still privately owned. Check back
periodically to view additions.

Oral History Project
The Oral History Project was started in 1994. The Historic Preservation Committee .....)
saw the need to interview early residents of College Station, and the committee started
the project. As we all know, projects grow, and this one has grown to such proportions
that it has had to be subdivided into categories. Below is a list of these categories. If
you too have memories of College Station, we would like to hear from you.
Oral History Project Categories: Northgate, Southside, Eastside, Early Education Part
I, Early Transportaion, The Old Days, and Early Education Part II, have already been
held. The following categories have been decided on, but no dates scheduled as yet:
A &M Campus Kids, Faculty /Staff/and Support Families of A &M College, Churches,
City Officials, Natives of College Station, and Military/Air Force Base/Project Housing
- World War II.
