A reserve who never played, he suited up and stood ready and willing on the sideline. Today the Aggie student body, known as the 12th Man, remains standing throughout the entire football game as a gesture of its loyalty and readiness for duty. REVEILLE'S GRAVES/SCOREBOARD: Reveille, the first lady of Aggieland, is the official mascot of Texas A&M. As a five-star General, she is the highest ranking member of the Corps of Cadets. When the first Reveille - died, she was buried in the north end of Kyle Field, so that the score of the Aggie football games was always visible from the site. After construction of the Bernard C. Richardson Zone, a graveyard was dedicated outside the Zone and a small electronic scoreboard was mounted on the Zone, so that the score would remain visible. ZONE SPORTS MUSEUM: The nation's only all -sports museum funded primarily by former athletes. You might not realize this, but Texas A&M is divided by the Union Pacific railroad tracks into main and west campus. Your tour has been in a small area east of the tracks, known as main campus. In addition to the campus attractions you've already seen, main campus includes engineering, architecture, geosciences, science, education and liberal arts buildings. Residence Halls, as well as the main dining centers and many campus support facilities, are also on main campus. Of particular interest on the main campus are the Clayton Williams, Jr. Alumni Center; the Jack. K. Williams Administration Building and The Bonfire Memorial. West campus includes most other sports facilities, including the Student Recreation Center and Reed Arena, as well as the Mays Business School, agricultural programs, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the political science and economics school, the Bush School of Government and Public Service, and The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum Ahm- . - Thank you for visiting Texas A&M*f Be sure to stay connected after your visit. R- S BUjtFPv HISTORY AND TRADITIONS When it's time to choose the university that's right for you, think about what sets Texas A&M apart. Most say it's the history and traditions, the idea that they will share the same traditions as Aggies past and future. You will be introduced to our history and traditions on the campus walking tour, and you will learn about them in great depth when you attend Fish Camp. One of the oldest traditions is Silver Taps, the final tribute held on the first Tuesday of every month for any student enrolled at Texas A&M who passed away in the previous month. Aggies gather in silence; hymns chime from Albritton Bell Tower; the Ross Volunteers Firing Squad fires three volleys; buglers play "Silver Taps" three times all are part of this sacred tradition. Of all the traditions that make Texas A&M so special, Muster is the one that binds us with the spirit of thousands of Aggies who have gone before, forever uniting the Aggie family. An annual remembrance, Muster is celebrated in more than 400 places worldwide, with the largest ceremony here on campus. At night, when each name on the Roll Call for the Absent is read, a friend or family member answers "Here" and a candle is lit to symbolize that while those Aggies are not present in body, they will forever remain with us in Aggie Spirit. The Bonfire Memorial celebrates the tradition, history and spirit of Texas A&M, and the dedication of those involved in the tragic collapse of the 1999 Bonfire. For Aggies who participated in Bonfire, the meaning and power of the Aggie Spirit is understood. The Bonfire Memorial seeks to share that understanding with respect, remembrance and spirit. Aggie fans are known as the 12th Man because they remain standing throughout the entire football game as a gesture of loyalty, support and readiness. The tradition of the 12th Man was born with E. King Gill, whose readiness to play in the 1922 Dixie Classic symbolized the unwavering willingness of Aggies to support their team. The Aggie Ring is the most enduring and .recognizable symbol of the Aggie network and the easiest way to identify a former student anywhere in the world. Every element of the Aggie Ring is symbolic of the history, traditions or core values of Texas A&M. When you experience these and other traditions first-hand, you will understand what is truly meant by "the spirit of Aggieland." 4 r - 0 22 TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC RESOURCES Undergraduate Studies Undergraduate Studies helps you get connected for academic success. Even though our more than 4,500 students from 120 -plus countries may say "hello" differently in their native languages, our international Aggies are happy to be greeted with a big "Howdy!" and eager to become friends with their U.S. counterparts. Texas A&M is fortunate to have a large international student population and many opportunities to help Aggies get to know each other and build friendships that will last a lifetime. Some of these students' fondest memories of Aggieland are going home for Thanksgiving or Spring Break with their Texan host. International students work side-by-side with their U.S. counterparts on projects in classes, in the labs or as members of student organizations, including international clubs that focus on different parts of the world. Some just love attending football games or experiencing the many cultural events we have to offer. Our world is a global one. Embracing that world can start with you reaching out to welcome an international Aggie to Texas A&M. LA 0 STUDY ABROAD Why Study Abroad? Traditional views of studying abroad —going to another country to study its language and culture—do not capture the breadth of opportuni- ties available to all Aggies. Study abroad encompasses a variety of international experiences—study, research, internships, volunteer and service learning programs. Texas A&M University is committed to having more students participate in international experiences. Study abroad opportunities are available for all students — freshmen through Ph.D. candidates. Students can go away as part of a large group enrolled in Texas A&M courses or on an individual program. Study abroad programs can be as short as a week or as long as a year and can be tailored to your major and degree plan. The goal of the Study Abroad Programs Office is to make interna- tional education a tradition at Texas A&M. Broadening your intellectual and personal horizons will help you navigate the global marketplace, practice or perfect a language and build your resume to enhance your career- options. And, through study abroad, Aggies can have a posi- tive impact on the lives of people throughout the world. international.tamu.edu/ips/index.asp I studyabroad.tamu.edu MULTICULTURAL SERVICES The Department of Multicultural Services provides multiple support services for current and prospective students from underrepresented populations as well as diversity education programs fostering inclusive learning environments for all students.
