Incorporated in 1871, Bryan prospered with its robust agricultural resources and a railway system completed in 1876. That same year, the State of Texas established the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas just south of Bryan. Many are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and some include Historical Markers. Carnegie Library I I I S. Main St., Downtown Bryan. Built in 1903 with funds from the Carnegie foundation, it is the oldest existing Carnegie Library in Texas. The grounds boast a xeriscape garden. The museum houses a collection of Brazos Valley fossils and other natural history of the area. A special feature is an extensive mural by local artist, Emma Stark, featuring Brazos Valley life 12,000 years ago. The museum hosts many children's activities and traveling exhibits. TEXAS WORLD SPEEDWAY Texas World Speedway is the only super speedway west of the Mississippi River and is the home test track for many NASCAR and Indy cars. Speeds as high as 239 m.p.h. have been clocked at this great speedway. Stagecoach Inn This breathtaking Greek Revival inn, built by Jacob and Mary Haller in 1850, was a favorite stopping place for notable Texans as they traveled from Houston to Austin or Waco. Elizabeth Moore and her husband, Harvin Moore, a distinguished Houston architect, have owned the inn since the 1970s and have painstakingly preserved it, furnished it with a memorable assemblage of Texas and American antiques, and created a euphoric garden setting. Visitors and groups are welcome by appointment for guided tours laden with historical perspective and sincere hospitality. The Stagecoach Inn is a working inn as well, offering year-round bed and breakfast accommodations in its lovely guest rooms. (409) 836-9515 The Browning Plantation This three-story Greek Revival plantation home, the beloved home of Col. W. W. Browning, is a sight to behold. Gracious verandas, spacious rooms and charming hospitality make this a favorite stop for visitors. The home fell into a pitiful state years ago and has been transformed, literally, by the current owners. You will not believe your eyes when you see the photos on the third level of the home taken before the extensive restoration. It is located on Texas 105 between Brenham and Navasota, or you can take the scenic drive from Chappel Hill on FM 115 5. PAGE 18 Washington -on -the -Brazos State Historical Park and the Star of the Republic Museum The scenic park is open daily from 8 am until sundown for recreational activities. The park also holds the Anson Jones Home, the Museum and Independence Hall. Many educational programs are designed for children. The Museum is open daily loam - 5pm except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and admission is free. Monastery of St. Clare Located 9 miles west of Brenham on Texas 105. A group of Franciscan Nuns support themselves here by raising miniature horses and selling handmade ceramic items in The Art Barn gift shop. The grounds are open daily except for Holy Week and Christmas. Groups may make reservations for guided tours. Visitors can take free guided tours from 2 - 4 pm, seven days a week. Within the grounds of this 25 -year-old organic farm school you will find beautiful gardens and walking trails, friendly animals of all varieties.
