COUNCIL MEMBERS PRESENT: Mayor Halter, Councilmen Ringer, Jones Boughton, Nemec, Prause, Runnels COUNCIL MEMBERS ABSENT: None STAFF PRESENT: City Manager Bardell, City Attorney Denton Deputy City Secretary/Council Coordinator Martin, City Planner Mayo, City Secretary Jones, City Engineer Ash VISITORS PRESENT: See guest register A~enda Item No. 1 - Council Concerns. Councilman Jones asked why the fees for temporary electrical service were increased without notification to the builders. He stated that he had contacted the Homebuilders Association and they were not aware of the increase. City Manager Bardell stated that he also was not aware of the increase and would investigate and report back at a later date. Councilman Runnels stated that he was informed earlier by a citizen that the bridge on University Oaks Blvd. needed to be examined to determine its' condition after the recent rain. He asked if the bridge had been checked. City Engineer Ash stated that he would investigate the bridge for possible damages and report later to the council. Agenda Item No. 2 - Consideration of granting Pet Paradise a permit to keep animals and fowl for sale. City Secretary Jones presented the item. She stated that City Ordinance No. 976 regulates commercial establishments engaged in keeping animals or fowl for sale, and requires them to have a permit. Mr. Bill Lewis has inspected the premises of Pet Paradise and recommends that this initial permit be granted. The permit is renewable annually. Councilman Ringer moved to grant the permit to Pet Paradise. Councilman Jones seconded the motion which passed unanimously. ~genda Item No. 3 - Presentation of the Clean Community System by William R. Nash of the Keep America Beautiful 9rganization. Marvin Tate, member of the Clean Community System team, introduced Mr. 003529 WORKSHOP CITY COUNCIL MEETING WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 1982 PAGE 2 William R. Nash of the Keep America Beautiful organization. Mr. Nash directs the Keep America Beautiful Field Service staff from the field office in Grand Prairie, Texas. He is also the National Project Director for Keep America Beautiful's Clean Community System. Mr. William R. Nash thanked the council for allowing him to make a presentation to the council on his project. Mr. Nash showed slides and a filmstrip and then discussed the Keep America Beautiful organization and their nationwide program. He asked the council to consider participating in the KAB program and becoming part of the Clean Community System. He also noted that Bryan and College Station may want to organize a joint project throughout both cities. Mrs. Dorothy Miller, of the Beautify Brazos County Association, stated that many citizens in the Bryan/College Station community commute from either city to the other, to their jobs and homes. She stated that this interaction is why they believe this effort should be a total community involvement throughout Brazos County. Mayor Halter suggested that the Beautify Brazos County Association meet with the College Station Community Appearance committee to discuss this project and to seek volunteers. Councilman Nemec asked if the City of College Station has a time limit in which to join the Clean Community System. Mr. Nash replied that the City of Bryan is planning to participate in the program and is waiting to see if the City of College Station is willing to become a joint CCS organization. He stated that the certification fee to join the organization is based on the total population of the community, and the cities of Bryan and College Station could split the cost. Councilman Ringer stated that he felt the Clean Community System is a worthwhile program and suggested that the City of College Station join with Bryan in their efforts and also encourage the University to participate. Councilman Jones proposed that the Community Appearance committee meet at the earliest opportunity to make recommendations and report back to the City Council. All council members agreed to this suggestion. Agenda Item No. 4 - Closed session to discuss personnel [6252-17(g)]. Mayor Halter announced that the city council would not hold closed session at this meeting. Agenda Item No. 5 - Adjourn.
