HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-10-84-16 - Resolution - 05/10/1984RESOLUTION NO. 05-10-84-16 WHEREAS, the deterioration of the Texas highway system and lack of improvements to cope with increasing traffic demands constitutes a serious threat to the economy of the state and to the safety and mobility of every Texan; and WHEREAS, the Federal Highway Administration has found that Texas has more miles of deficient roads and more substandard bridges than any other state; and WHEREAS, highway improvements in both urban and rural areas are lagging far behind the rapid growth of the state; and WHEREAS, for the first time in history, the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation does not have sufficient state funds to match federal highway funds, and failure to do so will result in the loss of those funds; and WHEREAS, according to a statewide selected poll conducted by Harte-Hanks/TAMU Public Policy Resources lab- oratory, December 9-23, 1983, a cummulative 52.63% favor more gasoline tax for highways, with 27.63% strongly favor; now THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED, that the College Station City Council does hereby request and urge The Honorable Governor of the State of Texas to place the Texas Highway System funding on call for the anticipated upcoming special session of the Texas State Legis- lature.
