HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-11-88-10 - Resolution - 08/11/1988RESOLUTION NO. 08-11-88-10 WHEREAS, the great State of Texas is undergoing an ex- citing transition in its economy that is leading it to the forefront of research, development, and advanced technology, and WHEREAS, the Central Texas cities between northwest Houston and Waco, connecting with Dallas by way of Interstate 35 form an industrial corridor that will carry these technological advances in the form of goods and services to the State and to the Nation, and WHEREAS, the combined population of the Central Texas Corridor cities is more than 2.2 million persons with over 3.5 million people in the county corridor, and WHEREAS, the need persists to create a viable thorough- fare for the agriculture, petroleum and other major Central Texas industries, and WHEREAS, educational research organizations such as Rice University, the University of Houston, North Harris County College, Tomball Campus, Texas A&M Uni- versity, and Baylor University, as well as research areas such as the Woodlands, need a major connecting artery for both students and researchers, and WHEREAS, since the advent of the original interstate system, the Central Texas area has experienced phenom- enal growth and is strategically linked to the major population and commercial areas of Texas, and WHEREAS, the growth of tourism is an important issue and a major route is needed for easy tourist access between visitor attractions in Houston such as Astroworld and Six Flags in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metro- plex which will also facilitate tourism growth in Central Texas, and WHEREAS the traffic count warrants a highway of the .~.~, ~', , level that will guard public safety. .) RESOLUTION NO. 08-11-88-10 PAGE 2 NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF COLLEGE STATION encourage the Texas Department of Highways and Public Transportation to provide funding for the study, planning, engineering and construction of this vital link in the Texas Highway System and be it further resolved that this organization will assist and help in every way possible to insure that this community gives full support to this endeavor.
