HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/13/1950 - Regular Minutes - City CouncilMINUTES OF CITY COUNCIL !.IEETTNG February 13,. 1950 The City Council met in regular session February 13, 1950, with the following present: Mayor Langford; Councilmen Ames, Ba.dgett, Black, Fitch, Halpin, and Orr; City ecretary McGinnis; City Manager Rogers, Assistant City Secretary Boswell; and Chair an of the City Planning Commission Rowlett. The following visitors were present at this meeting: Travis M. McKenzie, 0. C. Copeland, L. E. Winder, M. J: Purgerson, Marcel Knoeeny, Fritz Schultz, M. L. Anderson, T. P. Anderson, and E. H. Utzman'. The minutes of the City Council meeting held Ja.nunry 9, 1950, were read and approved. The Council ordered the report made by Messers. Orr, Benson and Orman at the January meeting of the Council pertaining to the studies made of the North Gate Area sewer improvements be made a part of the minutes of the Council meeting of January, 9, 150. Most of the visitors were present for the purpose of protesting the order of The City Council meeting in January banning center parking for trucks on Sulphur Springs Road in the North Gate Area. Mr. M. L: Anderson and 141r. Purgerson spoke for the group and both admitted that the privilege had been abused.but promised, that if the order be -rescinded, they would comply with the City regulations pertaining to this type parking and would admonish all other truck drivers to not abuse the center C parking privilege. Mayor Langford promised the group that he woi.11d.hold a conference with the State Highway Engineer, or his representative, on the matter of center parking and would report tb the truckers the results.from this conference. An agreement entered -into between the City and the Highway Department, before the paving was done, prohibits ceiter parking. Councilman Orr made a motion, seconded by Councilman Halpin, that Ordinance No. 142, an Ordinance pertaining to a general election to be held in April At which time a Mayor and three Councilmen will be chosen.by the voters of the City, be passed. The vote of the Council. was unanimous in favor of the motion.. Mr. McKenzis asked the Council for information on two points. First; can sewage connections be made in an area near the City Hall where he contemplates building an apartmentY The answer was yes. Second; will the City pay one-third of the cost of graveling a part of Tauber Street should he decide to erect the building on that site? .The answer was yes. . . The request for.re-zoning the lots on Jersey Street, immediately west of. Dr. Andre's clinic was passed at this meeting of the Council and reset for the March f meeting. Before the March date proper advertising will be done in compliance with the lata. This action came as a result of -a motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Ba.dgett. The vote of the Council was unanimous in favor of the -motion. '1 i, 00306" �� Minutes of February 13, 1950 page 2 Mr. E. H. Utzman, manager of the College Station office of the Southwestern States Telephone Company, presented to the Council his company's application for a telephone rate increase. Mr. Utzman explained the reasons why his company,is making this request. No action was taken on this request:at this meeting. Mr. John M. Rowlett,. Cha-j=an of the City Planning Commission, exhibited some plans and sketches that have been done by students in the Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture pertaining to proposed future plans for the City. Mr. Feagan reported the progress being made on the sewer extension in the North Gate Area, a joint construction, with the City of Bryan, and stated that plans and specifications were ready for bidders. City Manager Rogers was instructed to notify the City of Bryan that the City of College Station is ready to put out bids. Councilman Halpin made a motion, seconded by Councilman Fitch, that the Mayor be authorized to sign a renewal note, for the City of College Station, at the College Station State Bank. The Council vote was -unanimous in favor of the motion. A communication from Dr. F. B. Clark was passed until the March meeting. City Attorney Barger was'instructed to begin legal action on enforcing Ordinance No. 134• City Manager Rogers was instructed to purchase a copy of the 1948 Edition of Vernon's Texas Statutes for use in the City.
