HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-22-96-R-1 - Resolution - 02/22/1996q sofution RESOLUTION NO. 2-22-96-R-1 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION REQUESTING THAT THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (TXDOT) EXPEDITE RESTRIPING STATE HIGHWAY (SH) 60 AT THE EAST BYPASS AND LOWERING THE SPEED LIMIT ON SH 60 IN THE VICINITY OF SCOTT & WHITE HOSPITAL. WHEREAS, the number one Council Ends Statement, Transportation/Mobility, states that citizens benefit from the ability to move into, out of, and within the City of College Station in a safe and efficient manner; WHEREAS, the City has had numerous requests over the past several years to lower the 55 mph speed limit on SH 60 between Tarrow and the East Bypass and has received calls concerning traffic congestion and accidents in this area; WHEREAS, the 55 mph speed limit on SH 60 in the vicinity of Scott & White clinic has not yet been lowered and the TXDOT informed the City in October of 1995 that it would be lowered to 50 mph pending completion of further study; WHEREAS, a major cause of traffic congestion on SH 60 is the reduction in the number of traffic lanes from five (5) to two (2) on the overpass at the SH 6 East Bypass; WHEREAS, the TXDOT has short-range plans to restripe the SH 60 overpass at the East Bypass in order to add an additional lane to help ease congestion in the near term and long range plans to widen this overpass to five (5) lanes in the future. NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of College Station, Texas that; I. Improvements to increase the capacity of the SH 60 overpass at the East Bypass and a reduction in the speed limit on SH 60 between Tarrow and the East Bypass are a high priority to the City of College Station. II. The City urges that every effort be made to expedite the reduction in speed limit on SH 60 and to expedite the restriping and subsequent widening of the SH 60 overpass at the East Bypass in order to improve traffic safety and flow.
