HomeMy WebLinkAbout4-23-98-7f - Resolution - 04/23/1998 (3)RESOLUTION NO. 4-23-98-7f A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE DESIGNATION OF FM 2818 WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS OF COLLEGE STATION, AS "HARVEY MITCHELL PARKWAY" HONORING MR. HARVEY MITCHELL. WHEREAS, Harvey Mitchell was born in Cornersville, Tennessee on April 9, 1821, and moved to Texas when he was 18 years old; and, WHEREAS, he moved to Boonville and served as County Clerk from 1846-1850, and as County Judge from 1851-1854, and also worked as the newspaper agent, postmaster, and County Surveyor; and, WHEREAS, in 1872, Mr. Mitchell was instrumental in bringing the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas to Brazos County by offering 2,250 acres of land and $22,000; and, WHEREAS, Mr. Mitchell layed the foundation for much growth and progress in Brazos County, and justly earned the title of the "Father of Brazos County"; and, WHEREAS, these and countless other contributions by Mr. Mitchell are worthy of further recognition by the City Council of the City of College Station and other official bodies; and, WHEREAS, the Legislative Affairs Committee endorsed the naming of FM 2818 after Harvey Mitchell; and, WHEREAS, in conjunction with the City of Bryan and Brazos County, FM 2818 would be designated Harvey Mitchell Parkway throughout the city limits of Bryan and College Station; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS, that the City of College Station hereby supports the designation of this portion of FM 2818 to Harvey Mitchell Parkway, and thereby request that the Texas Department of Transportation take the appropriate action and make the necessary changes to designate this as a memorial route.
