A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE DESIGNATION OF STATE HIGHWAY 6 WITHIN
THE CITY LIMITS OF COLLEGE STATION, AS "EARL RUDDER FREEWAY"
HONORING MAJOR GENERAL JAMES EARL RUDDER.
WHEREAS, Major General James Earl Rudder graduated from Texas A&M University in 1932
and went on to serve in the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, exhibited outstanding leadership of the Ranger Force on D-Day and throughout the
remainder of World War 11; and,
WHEREAS, upon retiring in 1967, Major General Rudder served as the 16th President of Texas
A&M University and the 3rd President of the Texas A&M University System until his death in
1970; and,
WHEREAS, Major General Rudder's service to Texas A&M came during a pivotal time in
A&M's development, and he distinguished himself, Texas A&M, and College Station by
establishing Texas A&M as one the premier universities in the nation; and,
WHEREAS, these and countless other contributions by Major General Rudder are worthy of
further recognition by the City Council of the City of College Station and other official bodies;
and,
WHEREAS, the Legislative Affairs Committee endorsed the naming of State Highway 6 after
Major General James Earl Rudder; and,
WHEREAS, in conjunction with the City of Bryan and Brazos County, State Highway 6 would
be designated Earl Rudder Freeway throughout the city limits of Bryan and College Station;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS, that the City of College Station hereby supports the designation
of this portion of State Highway 6 to Earl Rudder Freeway, and thereby request that the Texas
Department of Transportation take the appropriate action and make the necessary changes to
designate this as a memorial route.
