HomeMy WebLinkAbout9-9-2004-13.11-c - Resolution - 09/09/2004RESOLUTION NO. 9-9-2004-13.11-c CITY OF COLLEGE STATION A RESOLUTION REQUESTING TEXAS CITIES BE GRANTED AUTHORIZATION TO LEVY AND COLLECT A MUNICIPAL SALES TAX ON MOTOR VEHICLE SALES IN THEIR CITY WHEREAS, Texas cities rely heavily on a local, municipal sales lax to finance their basic services such as street maintenance; and WHEREAS, Texas cities have not been granted legislative authority to assess a sales tax on motor vehicle sales as does the State of Texas-' and WHEREAS, Texas cities do not receive financml and from the]r state government as do crees in some other slates, and Texas cities' existing revenue sources are not adequate to meet the demands for municipal services: and WHEREAS. this addiuonal sales tax stream would provide much needed street maintenance funds for Texas cities which provide for a large portion of the surface transportauon needs of the State's increasingly urban populauon; now. therefore, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS' That the Texas Mumc~pal League pursue legislation to give Texas cities legislative authority to collect a sales tax on motor vehicle sales that occur within that city. What the Resolution is Intended to Accomplish: To provide Texas cities with the legal authorization to collect a sales tax on motor vehicle sales w~thin their city How the Resolution is City-Related/How it Addresses a Municipal Issue: Providing Texas cities with this authorization will provide a much needed revenue stream t~r basic services such as street repair and maintenance. Statewide Importance: The ability of Texas cities to have additional revenues for street repair and maintenance as well as other basic mumcipal services ns critical since a majority of Texans now live in cities.
