HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-24-2005-15.08 - Resolution - 10/24/2005RESOLUTION NO. 10-24-2005-15.08 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS, APPROVING WHEREAS, on June 29, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act into law, dramatically changing the course of American transportation history; and WHEREAS, the Interstate Highway System linked Americans in the 20th Century, making all sections of our country more accessible, bringing us closer together geographically and as a people, and promoted economic and social opportunities never before imagined; and WHEREAS, through this great enterprise, not only was our homeland better protected, but our economy was strengthened, diversified and energized, and educational opportunities were created for the American people. Also through this great enterprise we learned the value and the necessity of transportation infrastructure investment; and WHEREAS, the Interstate Highway System remains the most definitive example of how investment in transportation can yield substantial economic development for American cities and communities; and WHEREAS, while taking care of the basics, we must pursue novel transportation solutions to ensure domestic defense, to address a steadily increasing population and to protect the safety of our mobile citizens; and WHEREAS, the surface transportation reauthorization bill includes language establishing a National Surface Transportation Policy Study Commission charged with analyzing the current condition and future needs of the U.S. surface transportation system; and WHEREAS, local, regional, state and national advocates of improved transportation must come together to share their message with the public and with policymakers at all levels for the betterment of transportation policy; and WHEREAS, the Eisenhower Protocol, a document formalized on August 12, 2005, at the 8th Annual Texas Transportation Summit by the City of Irving, Texas, emphasizes the need for strong public investment and is a declaration of intent to establish a National Multimodal Transportation Policy that will lead us over the next 50 years; and WHEREAS, the City of College Station, whose name was derived from the train station located to the west of the Texas A&M campus in 1877, one year after the inauguration of Texas' first state institution of higher education, fully supports the need for a commitment to a strong transportation vision and the establishment of a National Multimodal Transportation Policy as provided in the Eisenhower Protocol; now, therefore, U:\Resolution 20051Resolution No. 10-24-2005-15.08 - Eisenhower.doc RESOLUTION NO. 10-24-2005-15.08 Page 2 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS: PART 1: That the City Council of College Station hereby confirms its dedication to the Eisenhower Protocol and the promotion of public multimodal transportation investment to ensure a strong vision of safety, efficiency and the economic welfare of all Americans for the next half century. The City pledges to promote improved public multimodal transportation and to seek out creative and innovative solutions that will carry the United States during the 21st Century. Furthermore, the City will follow the example of the leaders who came before us by pursuing a multimodal transportation network that will promote the social and economic development of our country. Together, we will shape the future. PART 2: That the City Council of the City of College Station hereby authorizes the Mayor to sign the Eisenhower Protocol in support thereof. PART 3: That this resolution shall take effect immediately from and after its passage. ADOPTED this 24th day of October, A.D. 2005.
