So, listen to Scott De Lucia tell the story about how he met the guy who opened up the Dixie Chicken. 00:00:23 Scott DeLucia (SD) We were always looking for sales promotions, and when we were a country music radio station back in 1969, Buck Owens had a song called “Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass”? So, they came up with the idea that you go to Montgomery Wards, which was in the old Manor East Mall, you sign up, and if your name is drawn, the WTAW disc jockey of your choice would mow your grass for you, and you got to keep the lawnmower. The winner decided I would be the disc jockey. So, on some random summer afternoon in 1969, there I go over there with the lawnmower, start mowing the lawn in this , uh, this little house. It was on Villa Maria, right near Amico Nave and the Shipwreck Grill in that area right there. I meet the guy, shake hands with him, and I start mowing the grass, and it's a hot day. I'd mowed for about 1/2 an hour, and he came outside and he said, “shut that thing off. Come on in, let's sit down and drink a beer or two”; so, I did. Then as things happened, we sat there for the better part of the afternoon. We got a chance to get to know each other, and it was a guy who had been going to vet school at A&M. He decided that he was going to be doing something other than that. So, in 1969, I met Don Ganter. He, along with a guy named Donny Annes, opened the Dixie Chicken. Now that was in 1974. Don won the contest for who's going to mow your grass, chose me as the disc jockey, had never met me before. We got to know each other, and obviously that was a friendship that lasted, uh, for as long as Don was alive. So that's how I met Don Ganter, and that was kind of one of the fun things about being a disc jockey at WTAW. 00:01:54 (TT) WTAW, been mowing your grass for 100 years.
