This is WTAW, the First 100 Years, I'm Tom Turbiville. There is a bit of irony in the Hicks
family involvement with a radio station whose call letters stand for : ‘Watch The Aggies Win’.
You see, they are University of Texas Longhorn folks, but no one has more connection to the
Bryan College Station community than our longtime owner, Bill Hicks. Such rivalries are pretty
much for the field to play.
00:00:39 Bill Hicks (BH)
It was important that we become the voice for Texas A&M Athletic, and I think-- I think that's
true today that WTAW is, eh, to its namesake, to its original namesake of watch the Aggies win,
is back affiliated with its-- with its origin, and that's important. It's important to me, it's always
been important to me and will always be important to me. So, when you talk about me being a
University of Texas guy, I mean, I'm no dummy. You come into a market like this and look at
what's the most important element? It's, well, the people, the community, the businesses in Texas
A&M University; I mean, that's where all the growth has come from. It's amazing to see the kind
of growth since 1960 that we've had in this community. Texas A&M is, in my mind, was always
the most important target to have a relationship, a connection with them that we would be their
primary media vehicle for broadcasting events and we do everything. We do football, basketball,
baseball, soccer; we do it all. Some of it's done online now because that's just the nature of
things, but we do just about everything we can for Texas A&M Athletic.
00:01:51 (TT)
And Bill Hicks says as long as he's here, we'll keep doing it. On WTAW, the First 100 Years.
