This is WTAW The First 100 Years. I'm Tom Turbiville. Talk radio on WTAW got started
almost by accident, according to Scott DeLucia.
00:00:26 Scott DeLucia (SD)
Bob Bick came here from Ruidoso, New Mexico, and he played a song by Guy Drake called
Welfare Cadillac. And he basically talked about people who are going to pick up their welfare
check driving a Cadillac. And Bob Bick made an offhanded comment about, yeah, man, that's
the last thing we need is people who can afford Cadillacs getting welfare checks. The phones
exploded. He had 45 minutes left in his air shift, and I don't know that he played another record
that day. Clearly, people were willing to voice their outrage about that song and what it meant to
the point that we went and got a machine. It would record your voice. Watkins hit it on the head.
He said, listen, this is what we do. We'll put them on the air. I think we started at 1:15 and went
till 2 o'clock with TalkBack Live, but th en people could call in anytime they wanted and record
that message, and we would play those back. That became a premier spot. While we enjoy
entertaining people, selling advertising and what it's all about, you could go back and look up
when Guy Drake's Welfare Cadillac came out and know when we started talk radio in Bryan-
College Station, Texas.

Well, that year was 1970, and here is just a clip.
00:01:36 Guy Drake (GD)
Well, I've never worked much. In fact, I've been poor all my life. I guess all I really own is 10
kids and a wife. This house is a live-in mine, but it's really a shack. But I always managed
somehow to drive me a brand new Cadillac.

And they called it Talk Back and a fascinating part of the history of WTAW. The first 100 years.
