So, take it back 50 years to 1972. Scott DeLucia is the program director of WTAW. 00:00:36 Scott DeLucia (SD) What I was charged with by Bill Watkins was , we need to get salutes from country music stars and other people in the radio industry saluting us on our 50th anniversary. So, it pretty much was my job as a one-man operation to do that. And some were easy to get, some were not. Charlie Pride, who was here playing at Town Hall, came in and recorded his in person. Uh, other people like Jim Ed Brown and Conway Twitty and people like that, we got them to record while they were here playing at the Lakeview Club, because that was what was great about country music. No matter how big the stars were, they came to places like Bryan, Texas. 00:01:10 Speaker 6 Right. 00:01:10 SD It was important for them to be here. The first one I went after, because you had to get it, was Elvis Presley. 00:01:15 TT Well, they tried but didn't quite get what they were looking for. 00:01:19 SD So, I wrote Elvis Presley and said y’know, this is 1972, in October of 1972, this will be our 50th anniversary. We would like to get something from you. Got stuff in from announcers and other radio stations, got tapes in from, from uh, people. When folks came to the Lakeview Club, we'd record them. So, we had all of those. We did not have Elvis, did not have Elvis. The day before, we got a telegram that said, the Colonel and Elvis congratulate WTAW on 50 years of broadcasting. 00:01:49 TT [Laughter] Well, I guess uh, telegram was better than nothing. This is WTAW, the first 100 years.
