I'm Tom Turbiville. It was the 1940s and WTAW was broadcasting from the YMCA building on the A&M campus. And yes, there was variety programming. Dick Bolin was a news reporter mainly, but he told me a few years back about when the Roans Chapel Singers came over to the WTAW microphones. 00:00:48 DB I handled the Sunday morning program from 8:30 to about 10:00, I think. And the feature of that regular live feature was the Roan's Chapel Singers, who came from Roan's uh, Roan’s Prairie. And they always showed up at uh, 15 minutes before airtime, and they had written down a list of the names of their songs. And I knew them by heart, and I knew the people, and they were good singers. They made their living going around doing weddings and funerals and everything else in the community there. Always enjoyed that. 00:01:23 TT Now, sure, you did not think that I'd let this pass without a sample of the Roan Chapel Singers? 00:01:29 Roan Chapel Singers (RCS) [Music] Goodbye children, we'll have to go where the rain don't fall and the wind don't blow. The other coat, I will not need it when we ride in the chant? in the morn. And we'll hold them shivering neat and keen. And you ain't must be the Sweet 16, and the white kid gloves you'll have to wear when we ride in the chant in the morn. 00:01:54 TT This is WTAW, the first 100 years.
