I'm Tom Turbiville. It was October the 14th, 1957, and WTAW had themselves a bona fide celebrity coming to work for them to go full-time, hosting a morning show from 8 to 10. Laura Lee McBride was 37 years old and had already become the first female ever to sing with Bob Wills in the Texas Playboys. Her dad was Tex Owens, who wrote the Eddie Arnold hit Cattle Call, and her aunt was Texas Ruby, who was known as Radio's original cowgirl. In her prime, Laura Lee had cut records for Decca and MGM. She had appeared with such Hall of Famers as Tex Ritter and Hank Thompson, and this gal was pure country. 00:01:09 Laura McBride (LB) [Music] I am nothing but a woman loving something. Something called a man. Perhaps to him I'm not human. But to me, why he's my man. 00:01:34 TT Laura Lee McBride married Dickey McBride, and they recorded together and they built their home out near Franklin. She had a 40-year career from 1940 to 1980, and she passed away at the age of 69 in 1989. Now you know about Laura Lee McBride, disc jockey at WTAW, the first 100 years.
