This is WTAW, the First 100 Years, I'm Tom Turbiville. Exactly 10 years to the day after WTAW
went on the air, October 7th, 1922, Bill Watkins was born. The now 90-year-old Watkins would
become the general manager and owner of WTAW; and here listen to him read a news article
from 1962, when WTAW won a big award for news. He was mighty proud.

Radio station WTAW at Bryan was awarded the Jordan Flaherty trophy fall at Fort Worth
Tonight for Outstanding Broadcast Journalism in Texas. Trophy was accepted on behalf of
WTAW by News Director Bob Jones. The trophy is given to the Texas AP member station, which
provides best coverage of a single story. WTAW was honored for Jones's exclusive story of
District Judge John M. Barron's calling a special grand jury to investigate the mystery death of
Henry Marshall. The agricultural official had been investigating Billy Saul Estes's cotton
allotment dealings, and he was found dead with five rifle shot and he was found near Franklin on
June 3rd, 1961. WTAW will retain the traveling trophy until next year, whose winner is
announced.
