The Texas and New Orleans Railroad was originally chartered on September 1, 1856 as
the Sabine and Galveston Bay Railroad and Lumber Company, making it one of the
antebellum railroads of Texas. In 1859, the name of the company changed to the Texas
and New Orleans Railroad Company, and it was eventually purchased by the Southern
Pacific Railroad Company in 1881. This linked it with a system that stretched from the
Pacific Northwest to Southern Louisiana. These rail lines played an important role in the
history of College Station as they transported students, faculty, and staff to and from the
university. The Sunbeam streamliners entered service on the Texas and New Orleans
Railroad in 1937, and the SunbeamlHustler (pictured above) was one of these well known
passenger trains that traveled through College Station.
