Minutes from September 8, 2025

Council Members Present: None
1. Call meeting to order and consider absence requests.
The meeting was called to order at 4:14 p.m., upon a motion made by Tre
Watson and a second by Tom Turbiville, the motion to approve Carla Elliott and
Karen Story as excused absences was unanimously approved. Gerald Burgner
called for a moment of silence in honor of Lou Hodges who recently passed.
2. Hear visitors. None
3. Agenda Items
3.1 Presentation, discussion, and the possible approval of minutes from
the previous meeting.
Upon a motion made by Tom Turbiville and seconded by Sherry Frisk,
the minutes were approved as written.
3.2
A. Cemetery
Sherry Frisk would like to use the money that was set aside for two Texas
Historic Markers for the College Station Cemetery to provide some type of
designation for the 54 unmarked graves in the Salem section. The committee
collectively agreed that they should seek advice from Washington Chapel on
what that should look like.
B. Historical Marker Program/Project HOLD Report
No new historical marker applications were received. No report on Oral History
Interviews, Educational Initiatives or Project Hold at this time. Nicole Cross is
the new Historic Archivist; she started on August 18th. She is familiarizing
herself with her new role.
C. Exploring History Lunch Series
All dates have been booked for 2025. Carla Elliott was not present to give an
update.

D. Americas 250
There is a meeting scheduled for September 25 at 1:30 at 1207 to discuss the
planning of community events for Americas 250, Henry Mayo is coordinating
the meeting.
E. American Mile
Upon a motion made by Lisa Mouton and seconded by Tom Turbiville, the
Historic Preservation Committee voted to establish that an American Mile brick
nomination must receive a minimum of five (5) affirmative votes in order to be
placed on the list. Furthermore, the committee determined the number of
bricks to remain open for engraving within each period as follows: 2005–2014,
two (2) bricks; 2015–2019, three (3) bricks; and 2020 to present, four (4)
bricks. The motion carried with four (4) votes in favor, one (1) opposed, and
one (1) abstention. Tom will send the list out again and once everyone votes,
he will send it to Parks and Recreation staff for approval.
3.3 Report by the Liaison of Parks and Recreation on matters pertaining
to the Historic Preservation Board.
None
3.4 Identification of upcoming local or area historical programs.
None
4. Discussion and possible action of future agenda items.
None
5. Presentation of historical items
Some members brought items to pass around.
6. Adjourn.
Upon a motion made by Tre Watson and a second by Lisa Mouton, the HPC
voted unanimously to adjourn the meeting @ 5:26 p.m.
