As it flows, it can pick up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants and deposit them into a storm sewer system or local water body. Anything that enters a storm sewer system is discharged untreated into the local water bodies and used by the public for swimming, fishing, and other recreational activities. Therefore, only discharges that are entirely composed of unpolluted stormwater may enter the storm sewer system. Illicit discharges are composed of non-stormwater elements, or pollutants, and are prohibited from entering any portion of the storm sewer system, including streets, gutters, ditches, or storm drains. Examples of stormwater pollutants include, but are not limited to:  Cleaning chemicals  Carpet cleaning wastewater  Pool water  Construction debris  Grease trap waste  Wood finish  Sealants  Petroleum products such as gas, oils, and solvents  Herbicides and pesticides  Portable toilet wastewater To keep the stormwater leaving your worksite clean, follow these simple guidelines:  Reduce erosion on site with erosion control methods such as hay bales and silt fences.  Maintain the chosen erosion control methods by checking on them after rain events and throughout the length of the project.  Large areas of disturbed soils should be covered with mats or seeded to prevent winds from picking up loose dirt.  When seeding and beginning the vegetation process, use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly.  Check equipment including tractors, trucks and skids for any leaks and repair promptly.  Dispose of hazardous waste, such as used auto fluids (antifreeze, oil, etc.), and batteries at designated locations.  Sweep up and properly dispose of construction debris like concrete and mortar and trash rather than hosing down areas.  Clean paint brushes within a designated area or dispose of properly. Note that cleaning paint brushes and disposing of excess paint into the municipal storm sewer system is illegal. The family of International Codes consists of the following:  International Building Code  International Residential Code  International Fire Code  International Mechanical Code  International Plumbing Code  International Fuel Gas Code  International Energy Conservation Code  International Property Maintenance Code  International Existing Building Code  International Swimming Pool and Spa Code The City of College Station is currently under the 2018 edition of the International Codes and the 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC). The NEC is published by the National Fire Protection Association. The International Code Council and National Fire Protection Association issue updated codes every three years. The code modifica- tions help clarify intent, recognize new construction methods and materials, and improve the minimum require- ments designed to safeguard the public health, safety, and general welfare. The adopting process is a lengthy one, involving reviewing/considering the proposed code editions, and present each proposed code and code amendments to the Construction Board for their consideration prior to the codes be- ing presented to City Council for adoption.
